Recently, some Pixel phones have experienced serious issues such as battery overheating and even melting while charging. However, the tech giant is making strong efforts to prevent this. The company is preparing to bring the Battery Health Assistance feature, which debuted with the Pixel 9a, to other Pixel models as well, as seen in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 update.

Android 16 beta update brings ‘Battery Health Assistance’ feature

For those who don’t know, Google introduced a charging management feature called Battery Health Assistance with the Pixel 9a earlier this year. This feature is enabled by default and cannot be turned off manually.

According to Google’s support page, Battery Health Assistance helps manage a phone’s long-term battery health and performance. It can help prevent serious issues such as battery degradation, overheating, and even melting while charging.

Some users noticed the new feature after installing the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 update on their phones. In short, Google plans to roll out this feature to older Pixel models soon.

Google defines the feature as follows; ”Lithium-ion batteries are consumable components that eventually require replacement. As your battery ages, Battery health assistance helps manage its long-term health and performance. This software adjusts the battery’s maximum voltage in stages. It starts at 200 charge cycles and continues gradually until 1000 charge cycles. This helps stabilize battery performance and aging.

According to images shared by users who have tested Battery Health Assistance, the feature won’t be mandatory as it was on the Pixel 9a. In short, you can turn it off if you choose to. However, Google recommends always keeping it enabled to help maintain your battery’s health and performance.

This feature is important to prevent your battery from wearing out quickly

The Battery Health Assistance feature may slightly reduce charging speed and battery life on Pixel phones. However, it helps protect the battery and is quite handy in the long run. This could prevent battery issues that some Pixel models have been experiencing recently.

In the past few months, there have been numerous reports of older Pixel models overheating and even melting their batteries while charging. In fact, just last week, a user named Arielle reported that her Google Pixel 6a caught fire and melted during charging. It’s important to note that she was using a non-OEM, third-party charger.
