The Google Pixel 9 Pro smartphone has a vapor chamber for enhanced and accelerated heat dissipation. Multiple teardown videos have now offered a detailed look at the smartphone chipset cooling solution.
Pixel 9 Pro vapor chamber detailed in teardown videos
Google recently unveiled the latest Pixel 9 series, which includes the Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The company proudly announced that the Pixel 9 Pro series of smartphones are cooled using a vapor chamber.
A vapor chamber isn’t a new technology. Multiple smartphone manufacturers have relied on passive cooling technology. The vapor chamber primarily sits on top of the SoC (System on a Chip) to draw heat away from the CPU, GPU, and RAM package.
During the Pixel 9 launch event, Google briefly showed the vapor chamber on a Pixel 9 Pro smartphone. The search giant seemed to highlight the feature but did not discuss the same in detail.
A trio of popular YouTube channels have disassembled a Pixel 9 Pro smartphone and published their videos. The teardown videos reveal Google’s design and deployment technique for the vapor chamber.
The Google Tensor G4 SoC powers all the Pixel 9 smartphones. It is this chip that the vapor chamber tries to keep under a reasonable temperature range. Keeping temperatures on the lower end ensures optimal performance without the need to throttle speeds.
The Tensor G4’s top side faces the mid-plate of the phone, resting on a square of thermal foam, the teardown videos revealed. Underneath the foam lies the vapor chamber. It is made of copper and reportedly appears a little thin.
Only the Pro models have the new vapor chamber cooling
All the Pixel 9 series smartphones are indeed flagship-grade Android phones. However, not every Pixel 9 smartphone has a vapor chamber to keep its chipset cool. Google has indicated that only the Pixel 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold have this advanced heat dissipation system.
As one of the teardown videos revealed, the entry-level Pixel 9 smartphone has multiple layers of graphite film. Graphite has excellent thermal conducting properties. The graphite layers placed on the SoC inside the Pixel 9 seem to have a large surface area. This should help keep the smartphone’s internal temperatures within a safe range.
