Samsung Galaxy A53 5G vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Design

These two smartphones actually look somewhat similar, and use similar materials as well. Both devices include thin bezels, a centered display camera hole, and flat displays. Even when you look at them from the back, they’re not that different. Both phones have camera setups in the top-left corner on the back, and even though those camera modules look a bit different, the difference is not major. Motorola’s camera island is smaller, though, due to less cameras, mainly.

Both of these phones are made out of plastic and glass. They come with a plastic frame, plastic backplate, and a glass front. Do note that they do not feel cheap, though, not at all. They actually feel quite substantial in the hand, and their size has something to do with it. Both devices are quite large, though the Galaxy A53 5G is considerably smaller. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is a lot taller, a bit wider, and also thicker. On top of that, it’s also heavier than the Galaxy A53 5G.

Neither of the two phones is particularly grippy, so keep that in mind. Using a case may be a good idea in both cases. The Galaxy A53 5G is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance, while the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is water-repellent. They both feel really good in the hand, as long as you like large devices. If you don’t, well, chances are neither will appeal to you. Both companies did a nice job in the design department.

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Display

They have considerably different displays. The Samsung Galaxy A53 5G comes with a 6.5-inch fullHD+ (2400 x 1080) Super AMOLED panel. That display offers a 120Hz refresh rate, and it gets bright enough, though it’s far from the brightest panel out there. We’re looking at a 20:9 display aspect ratio here, and the panel is protected by the Gorilla Glass 5, by the way. The phone has a screen-to-body ratio of around 85.4-percent.

Now, in regards to the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022). That handset also has a 120Hz flat display, but this one is an IPS LCD panel. It measures 6.8 inches, and it’s a fullHD+ (2460 x 1080) panel. Motorola is using the Gorilla Glass 3 to protect this display. That iteration of Gorilla Glass is quite old at this point, and doesn’t do a great job of keeping microscratches at bay. This handset has a screen-to-body ratio of around 85.8-percent.

Both displays are fairly good, but the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G takes the cake. That panel, in comparison, offers better colors, more contrasty and saturated. That’s not surprising considering Samsung opted to use a Super AMOLED panel here. The IPS LCD display on the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is nothing to scoff at, though. Both panels offer a high refresh rate, and feel great to use. They also offer good viewing angles.

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Performance

Specs-wise, both of these phones are mid-range. The Samsung Galaxy A53 5G is fueled by the Exynos 1280 SoC, and it comes with 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of RAM. The Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022), on the flip side, comes with the Snapdragon 695, in addition to 8GB of RAM. Neither phone uses the fastest LPDDR RAM, nor the fastest UFS flash storage, by the way. That is to be expected in this price segment, though.

What is the performance like, though? Well, surprisingly enough, in our own testing, the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) did a better job. When it comes to regular, everyday tasks, it was smoother than Samsung’s handset. The Galaxy A53 5G had a tendency to lag here and there. The performance overall was decent, but you’d expect better, to be quite honest. What’s interesting, though, is that it did a great job in the gaming department. So it was probably just a matter of optimizations or something of the sort.

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Battery

These two smartphones actually have the same battery capacity. They both come with a 5,000mAh battery pack. With the Galaxy A53 5G, though, that battery has to juice up a somewhat smaller display. Is the battery life good on either of them? Well, yes, though the Galaxy A53 5G pulls ahead, at least in our testing.

The Galaxy A53 5G managed to provide a lot of use on a single charge. We managed to get over the 8-hour screen-on-time mark without a problem, on several occasions. Gaming will, of course, affect that, as will various other things. That’s why I don’t prefer to talk about exact numbers. One thing is for sure, though, is that the Galaxy A53 5G offers great battery life. The Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) battery life is not bad at all, it’s quite good, but nowhere near what the Galaxy A53 5G provided.

What about charging? Well, neither of the two devices support wireless charging, let’s get that out of the way first. In regards to wired charging, the Galaxy A53 5G does offer support for 25W charging. Do note that you’ll need to get the adapter separately, though, as it’s not included in the box. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) only offers 10W charging, but the charger is included in the box.

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Cameras

What about the cameras? Well, both phones hold their own, but neither will win any awards in the camera department. The Galaxy A53 5G comes with a 64-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and two 5-megapixel units (macro and depth). The Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022), on the flip side, has a 50-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultrawide unit, and a 2-megapixel depth shooter.

Galaxy A53 5G Review 1

How’s the picture quality, though? Well, in good lighting both phones do perform really well. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) does tend to boost the colors a bit too much from time to time, and the same goes for sharpening. Other than that, both do a good job when the lighting is good. What about when it goes away? Well, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) loses color accuracy in low light, while the Galaxy A53 5G doesn’t capture a great amount of detail in such conditions.

Ultrawide cameras are not particularly good on either phone, to be quite honest. They do perform differently compared to the main shooters, and on a lower level. Overall, though, the cameras are good, as long as you manage your expectations.

Audio

If you still use a 3.5mm headphone jack, you’ll be glad to know that at least one of these phones has it. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) comes with an audio jack, unlike the Galaxy A53 5G. When it comes to speakers, the situation is completely opposite. The Galaxy A53 5G includes a set of stereo speakers, while the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) does not.

As you’d expect, considering the setup, the Galaxy A53 5G offers better sound output. Those speakers provide a really balanced sound, that includes even some bass. It doesn’t get distorted, not even at higher volumes. The Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022), well, the story is different. It has a single speaker that, if you tune up the volume too high, gets considerably distorted. In general, it cannot compete with the stereo setup on the Galaxy A53 5G.
