As per Paramount’s description of the movie, the synopsis reads:
In 1969, a young Jud Crandall has dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine behind, but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within and is forced to confront a dark family history that will forever keep him connected to Ludlow. Banding together, Jud and his childhood friends must fight an ancient evil that has gripped Ludlow since its founding, and once unearthed has the power to destroy everything in its path. Based on the untold chapter from Pet Sematary, Stephen King’s chilling novel, PET SEMATARY: BLOODLINES is a terrifying prequel and the untold story of why sometimes dead is better…
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines Brings a New Chapter to Stephen King’s Classic Horror.
The original 1989 adaptation of Pet Sematary is still regarded as one of the best King movies of the decade. The 2019 version made a number of changes to the story, some of which worked and others that didn’t, but the remake did pave the way for this new expansion of the world where sometimes dead is better.
The movie brings with it a strong cast including The X Files star David Duchovny and Jackie Brown’s Pam Grier, along with Jackson White, Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Henry Thomas, Natalie Alyn Lind and Isabella Star LeBlanc.
While the brief synopsis gives a very broad overview of what the movie will focus on, there are no specific details about the plot itself. The origin of Pet Sematary’s central evil ground is something that has been touched on in the movie adaptations and in King’s novel, but similar to the brief backstory of how Jud describes his own experiences with the cursed land, which included him burying his own dog there when it died, and the burial and resurrection of Timmy Baterman, the first person to be revived as a creature of evil intentions, there is still much to be explored in the film.
For fans of King, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is sure to be another divisive addition to the universe of the horror icon’s work. If adaptations of his stories have been hit and miss at times, then new stories built around them are even more volatile. All will be revealed when Pet Sematary: Bloodlines lands on Paramount+ on October 6.
