“Pencils Vs Pixels is a celebration of the unique magic of 2D hand-drawn animation and an exploration of how the Disney Renaissance of the late 1980s and early 1990s led to an animation boom that was quickly upended by the computer animation revolution that followed. Narrated by Ming-Na Wen, PENCILS VS PIXELS features many of the legendary artists who brought these now-classic films to life as they guide us through the last few decades of animation and into the future that’s yet to come.”
Pencils Vs Pixels is directed by Bay Dariz and Phil Earnest, written by Bay Dariz, and with cinematography from Dustin Supencheck and Michael Delano, the documentary is narrated by Mulan star Ming-Na Wen.
Pencils vs Pixels Will Feature Some Major Names From the World of Animation
Pencils Vs Pixels will feature all manner of well-renowned animators and Hollywood names. One such name is Seth MacFarlane, who is of course the creator and star of the television series Family Guy and The Orville, and co-creator of American Dad! And The Cleveland Show.
Other big names in the animation game to feature in Pencils Vs Pixels include Pete Docter, who is the Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and is best known for directing some of the most critically acclaimed titles in the Pixar catalog including Monsters Inc., Up, Inside Out, and Soul.
Animator, director, screenwriter, and film producer John Musker, best known for writing and directing the Disney films The Great Mouse Detective, 1989’s The Little Mermaid, 1992’ Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog, and Moana, will also feature alongside Disney animator and illustrator Glen Keane, whose credits include Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Tarzan, and Tangled.
But that’s not all! Pencils Vs Pixels will also include insights from Sergio Pablos, the animator, director and screenwriter behind the likes of Despeicable Me and Smallfoot, as well as Netflix’s first original animated feature film Klaus.
Other major industry names set to be included in the documentary include film critic and film historian Leanard Maltin, painter, animator, and director Aaron Blaise, award-winning author, historian, filmmaker, and preeminent expert on women in early animation Mindy Johnson, Gravity Falls creator and star Alex Hirsch and many more!
