Digital privacy is one of the most important topics right now, and it’s easy to feel like you’re walking around with a target on your back. A new tech startup named OSOM just introduced its interesting new Privacy Cable. The company posted an image to its Twitter account recently.
OSOM is picking up the pieces left behind when the Essential Ph-1 when bottoms up. The company Essential was bought by Carl Pei’s Nothing, but former employees banned together and established OSOM. Now, people are calling the company’s first phone, the OSOM OV1, the spiritual successor to the Essential Ph-1.
OSOM unveils its Privacy Cable
Let’s face it, if you own so much as an electric toothbrush, your digital privacy could be at stake. It’s so easy to put sensitive data up for grabs when you do anything in our constantly connected world. This is one thing that OSOM acknowledged with its upcoming OV1. In a tweet, the company said “Own your privacy”, and that could act as a tagline for the brand overall.
The OSOM Privacy Cable is a hardware privacy solution developed by the company so that you can charge your phones securely. Most of the time, we charge our phones by plugging them into the wall or placing them on a wireless charger. But sometimes, it’s easier to plug your phone into your computer while doing work. The issue with that is that if your computer gets infected, your phone could also be at risk.
The OSMOS Privacy Cable has a way of dealing with that issue. It lets you disable data transfer while you’re charging your phone. This isn’t a software solution, it’s a hardware one. A USB-C port is designed to take different types of prongs. Some are for transferring power, and some are for transferring data. The Privacy Cable, when the switch is flipped, will physically retract those prongs for data and disconnect them.
This means that the phone will only be getting power. Though people don’t charge using their phones all too often, this will still give them peace of mind when doing so. Not only that, this should, hopefully, inspire other companies to follow suit and implement their own versions of the technology.
