OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT’s AI search is now available to all users. The feature was previously limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, and will soon be accessible to anyone with a free OpenAI account, according to an announcement during OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” event. The new feature allows ChatGPT to search the web when you ask questions that require up-to-date information.
ChatGPT Search will make finding information easier
ChatGPT Search allows ChatGPT to find answers by searching the web. The tool automatically knows when to search the web, like checking the weather or recent sports scores. You can also force a web search by clicking the search icon in the prompt bar.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Search provides direct links to the sources used to answer a question. By clicking the “Sources” button you can see a list of references in a sidebar so you can verify the information.
Notably, the new search feature has better designs for categories like weather, news, sports, maps, and stocks. For example, if you ask for the weather in Positano, Italy, ChatGPT can give you current forecasts with new visuals. You can then ask follow-up questions like requesting dinner recommendations and ChatGPT will give you local restaurant options found online.
How to search the web with ChatGPT
You can search in ChatGPT using the web search feature which is available at chatgpt.com, desktop, and mobile apps. Type your query in the input box or click the globe icon to enter search mode. You can also simply type “/”and select Search from the pop-up menu to get to this feature quickly.
If your query might benefit from information on the web, it will automatically search the web. You can also regenerate any GPT-4o response to perform a web search. This will allow ChatGPT to expand its initial answer with additional details from the web. Results will include inline citations for easy verification – hover or click on citations to see the sources. For mobile users, results may include maps or images if the result is appropriate. You can also set ChatGPT as your browser’s default search engine with a Chrome extension and search from the address bar.
In related news, OpenAI released ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice with Vision on Day 6 of their “12 Days of OpenAI” event. This is a new way to interact with ChatGPT using voice, images, and video. Currently, the feature is available only to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers.
