Earlier in February, OpenAI launched its Operator AI agent in many countries. OpenAI’s Operator offers assistance with web browsing and simple tasks. Now, the artificial intelligence-focused firm has introduced a handful of new tools for developers. OpenAI has designed its new tools to help developers and businesses build their own AI agents.

OpenAI’s new developer tools are part of its new Responses API

OpenAI said that its new tools for developers to build AI agents are part of the new Responses API. Using these tools, enterprises can create custom artificial intelligence-powered agents that can perform web searches, scan through files, and navigate websites for simple tasks. The functionality of these AI agents appears to be similar to OpenAI’s Operator agent.

The Responses API has replaced the company’s Assistants API, which the company will deprecate in the middle of 2026. The new API combines the simplicity of the Chat Completion API and the capabilities of the Assistants API for making agents. OpenAI believes “the Responses API will provide a more flexible foundation for developers building agentic applications.”

Thanks to this tech, developers can use a single Reponses API call to solve increasingly complex tasks using different tools and model turns. These tools work in harmony to connect AI models to the real world, making them more useful in completing tasks.

The Responses AI initially supports three built-in tools

As per OpenAI, the Responses API currently supports three major built-in tools. The first up is the web search, which provides real-time, cited answers by collecting information from the internet. The second one is a file search tool that helps users gather information from large document repositories by utilizing metadata filtering and optimized query processing. There’s also a computer-use tool that allows AI agents to perform actions on a PC, such as browsing, entering data, and navigating software interfaces.

In addition to the new Responses API, OpenAI has also launched the Agents SDK, which will help developers orchestrate the workflow of their AI agents seamlessly. The company described it as a way for multiple small teams to work together to solve complex tasks.
