Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently gave an interview at the Paris AI Action Summit in which he spoke on Elon Musk attempting to place a bid on OpenAI. Unfortunately for Musk, Altman’s words were anything but kind where the OpenAI CEO accused Musk’s attempts as trying to slow them down.
Musk’s attempts to hinder OpenAI
During the interview, Altman did not hold back in his comments about Musk. The CEO claims that this attempted buyout was just one of several moves by the Tesla and SpaceX CEO to slow OpenAI’s progress. According to Altman, “Elon tries all sorts of things for a long time. This is the latest — you know, this week’s episode. I think he’s probably just trying to slow us down.”
He also added, “I wish he would just compete by building a better product, but I think there’s been a lot of tactics. Many, many lawsuits, all sorts of other crazy stuff, now this. And we’ll try to just put our head down and keep working.” Altman was also asked whether Musk’s approach came from a position of insecurity, in which he agreed. “Probably his whole life is from a position of insecurity. I feel for the guy. I don’t think he’s, like, a happy person. I do feel for him.”
Musk recently tried to bid on OpenAI for those unfamiliar with what’s happening, but the company’s CEO asserts that OpenAI is not for sale. The bid is said to be valued close to $100 billion, which is a lot of money.
Musk and Altman have clashed repeatedly over the years. It’s ironic as both Musk and Altman co-founded OpenAI. However, Musk eventually left the company and has criticized OpenAI’s for-profit moves since.
Elon’s AI alternative
Ever since Musk left OpenAI, he has founded his own AI company, xAI. The company has created its own AI-powered chatbot called Grok.
Grok competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and integrates into the X social media platform. According to Musk, he claims that Grok is a more open and transparent alternative. In some ways, that is true. Some users have discovered that Grok is better at providing users with uncensored answers, while others accuse ChatGPT of being too politically correct.
In any case, the AI space is heating up right now. There are many players who have entered the market including Samsung, Google, Amazon, and Apple, just to name a few. However, it remains to be seen who will be left standing at the end of the day.
