Last month, OnePlus introduced its latest smartwatch called the OnePlus Watch 3. The new wearable arrived with key battery & health improvements and runs Google’s Wear OS 5 operating system. Soon after the launch, some reports claimed that the OnePlus Watch 3 would only receive two years of OS updates. However, a fresh report by Android Authority suggests otherwise.
OnePlus will deliver three years of software and security updates for the Watch 3
OnePlus has reached out to Android Authority and multiple other publications to clarify the misunderstanding regarding the OS update cycle for the Watch 3. The company said that both the OnePlus Watch 2 and Watch 3 will receive “3 years of quarterly security updates” and “3 years of software updates”. However, they will not get three Wear OS version upgrades. OnePlus launched the Watch 2 with Wear OS 4 and won’t offer a major OS upgrade after the Wear OS 6 version in 2026.
As for the OnePlus 3, it will eventually receive the Wear OS 6 in 2026 and Wear OS 7 updates by 2027. Compared to other Wear OS devices, the Watch 3 will match Google’s Pixel Watch 3 with three years of security support. However, Google’s wearable will receive one more Wear OS version upgrade and much speedier support than the OnePlus offering. Samsung, on the other hand, promises to deliver four years of Wear OS version and security updates for the Galaxy smartwatches.
OnePlus has had a messy launch experience with the Watch 3
The OnePlus Watch 3 delivers impressive new features as compared to its predecessors. However, the messy launch of the wearable has distracted everyone from its potential. First, the company faced some mockery when early OnePlus Watch 3 users spotted a “Meda in China” typo on its backplate.
The unfortunate manufacturing accident has delayed the watch’s release to April. By then, the company will fix the typo and start shipping the first batch of watches out with an apology letter. Now, the company is dealing with the Watch 3’s operating system support fiasco that stemmed from miscommunication on details. The brand previously said that it would only release “three version (Wear OS) updates” for the new smartwatch.
That said, the OnePlus Watch 3 is currently available to pre-order in the US for $329. The wearable comes in Obsidian Titanium and Emerald Titanium colorways. The company will start shipping the pre-ordered units by April 15th or April 16th.
