Samsung didn’t tell you this at Unpacked, but the Galaxy Z Flip 6 doesn’t support DeX. Yes, the $1,100 flagship lacks the feature that extends it into a desktop-like experience by connecting a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. The company also hid the fact that the $650 Galaxy Watch Ultra doesn’t have a rotating bezel while both foldables miss out on seamless updates. The Galaxy AI watermark has gotten bigger too.
Galaxy Z Flip 6 still lacks Samsung DeX support
Samsung DeX is a powerful tool found on flagship Galaxy devices. However, despite falling in the flagship category, the Flip series foldables have always lacked it. Last year, the company said it didn’t add DeX support to these devices because they don’t have a robust heat dissipation system. Using the phone in a PC setup generates more heat than usual, potentially causing performance and safety issues.
This year’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes with a vapor chamber cooling system, a first for the lineup. The camber is allegedly 150% bigger than the one in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, so the new foldable shouldn’t have overheating issues. However, Samsung still didn’t deem it secure enough to add DeX support, which is a bummer. It’s not like the phone lacks power—it uses the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset as the Fold 6 and S24 Ultra.
Maybe Samsung can enable DeX on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 via a software update. But no amount of software updates can fix another disappointing move from the company this year. Its much-hyped Galaxy Watch Ultra lacks the iconic rotating bezel. The ultra-powerful watch aimed at professionals and power users doesn’t feature the physical bezel ring that many Galaxy Watch fans have come to love over the years.
On this note, Samsung’s new foldables also do not support seamless updates. A feature aimed at shortening downtimes during software updates, Google introduced seamless updates almost a decade ago. After avoiding it for years, Samsung finally brought the feature to its devices starting with the Galaxy A55 earlier this year. We expected it to offer seamless updates on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Gaalaxy Z Flip 6, but not to be.
Samsung increased the AI watermark size on One UI 6.1.1
One UI 6.1.1 debuted with the new foldables and brought more Galaxy AI features, including an impressive tool that lets you create images from rough sketches. Considering the potential misuse or abuse, Samsung increased the watermark size on images edited with Galaxy AI. Alongside the existing “starry” logo, the watermark now includes the text “AI-generated content”. Samsung is being transparent here.
The new One UI version also brings another change to Samsung foldables, a more positive one. When registering a new fingerprint, you no longer need to unfold the device, at least on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The cover screen can handle the task. Earlier, you could only register fingerprints via the inner display. Older Fold models should pick up this improvement with the One UI 6.1.1 update in the coming weeks.
