The Nintendo Switch has come out on top as the best-selling console of November 2021, according to a new set of reports by NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella. In the wake of the PS5 and Xbox Series X still being tough to get, it has left room for Nintendo to swoop in and gain some of those hardware sales.
While the Nintendo Switch OLED model isn’t much easier to find, the regular Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Lite are much more readily available. The holidays are just around the corner, so no doubt consumers who are looking to buy consoles for gifts are going to go with what they can actually buy. And at this point, that’s the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Switch is the best-selling console in Nov. with more than 1M units sold
The total number of units sold this past month for Nintendo was 1.13 million. That’s across the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED models. Also worth noting is that these figures are based on US sales. And does not take into account whether the Switch was the best-selling console in November globally.
Even with the Switch doing so well this month though, hardware sales overall are still down. According to Piscatella, hardware sales decreased by 38% (about $883 million) compared to November of 2020. When both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launched. Considering how hard it is to get either of those systems even more than a year later, that’s not surprising.
It’s also worth taking into account that neither console is in its launch year anymore. So a lot of consumers have already purchased them. Piscatella also notes that the drop in hardware spending compared to last year is driven by the lack of inventory.
The Switch is also the best-selling console year-to-date
The Switch’s accolades don’t stop at the best-selling console of November. Based on its track record throughout the past year, it’s also the best-selling console year-to-date. Both availability and the arrival of the Switch OLED have contributed to this overall success.
Piscatella highlights a range of other video game-related sales figures including the best-selling games of each platform, and the top 20 games on all platforms for the month of November. In case there was any doubt, Call Of Duy: Vanguard is the number one best-selling game. Followed by Battlefield 2042, Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, Forza Horizon 5, and Madden NFL 22.
