Crunchyroll has released a first look trailer for the Suzume English dub featuring Nichole Sakura (Superstore, Ghosts, Star Wars: Visions) in the titular role. The anime’s English dub version, which comes to theaters in April, comes as Sakura recently wrapped up work on the Universal feature, Please Don’t Destroy. She can currently be seen in the Hulu series Maggie and voices a role in the upcoming Disney Channel series KIFF. For a first look at her work in Suzume, you can watch the new trailer below.
With Bill Millsap serving as the English voice director, the rest of the English voice cast has also been revealed. This includes Josh Keaton as Souta, Jennifer Sun Bell as Tamaki, Joe Zieja as Serizawa, Rosalie Chang as Chika, Amanda C. Miller as Rumi, Mela Lee as Miki, and Cam Clarke as Munakata.
Suzume is written and directed by Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, Weathering with You). Shinkai’s Weathering with You was selected as Japan’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category of the Academy Awards in 2020. It was also nominated for four categories at the 47th Annie Awards, including Best Animated Independent Feature Film.
The official synopsis for Suzume is as follows:
Suzume is a coming-of-age story for the 17-year-old protagonist, Suzume, set in various disaster-stricken locations across Japan, where she must close the doors causing devastation. Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan) when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly drawn by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob… Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.
