Apple is reportedly planning to transition to OLED displays for the entire iPhone lineup starting in 2025. The Cupertino tech giant will no longer use LCD panels on its iPhones from next year, Japanese publication Nikkei reported on Tuesday. The company already switched to OLED panels on its premium iPhone models.

The iPhone SE 3rd-gen, released in 2022, is the last model to offer an LCD screen. Now, the iPhone SE will join the rest of the lineup in using OLED starting from next year. Notably, there already are rumors of an iPhone SE 4 with an OLED display. It will finally complete Apple’s adoption of OLED display technology across all iPhones.

Japan’s JDI and Sharp will be excluded from the iPhone display supply chain

The report claims that Japan’s JDI and Sharp will be excluded from the iPhone display supply chain due to their focus on LCD panels. Notably, in 2015, both companies provided around 200 million LCD panels for the iPhones. However, ever since the introduction of the OLED panel-toting iPhone X in 2017, LCD shipments have dropped significantly.

In 2023, JDI and Sharp’s iPhone LCD panel shipments decreased dramatically to around 20 million. However, they will continue to provide LCDs for the iPhone SE 3. Both companies once relied heavily on Apple as their main source of revenue. JDI is now focusing on increasing its business strategy around LCDs for automotive devices, while Sharp is scaling back its LCD business.

Apple has tapped LG Display and BOE for the upcoming iPhone SE’s OLED panels

Furthermore, Nikkei claims that Apple has tapped LG and BOE for the OLED displays of the upcoming iPhone SE model for 2025. The Cupertino giant has reportedly started placing orders for the screens for the iPhone SE 4 with these suppliers. Samsung currently holds around half of the iPhone OLED display market. LG Display and BOE have a share of about 30 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

In the meantime, Apple is all set to host its new event tagged “It’s Glowtime” on September 9. The company will introduce the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max models at the event. The new iPhones are expected to come with some new Apple Intelligence features.

Apart from the iPhones, the brand could also announce the Apple Watch Series 10, Watch Ultra 3, and AirPods 4. Since the event is just around the corner, we’ll know more soon.
