Picture: Netflix

The first Code 8 movie came after a successful crowdfunding campaign of a sci-fi short that took people by surprise on YouTube. After hitting Netflix and doing well in the Netflix top 10s, Netflix decided to give a sequel a green light.

Here’s the official synopsis for the sequel:

“In this sequel to Code 8, Connor (Robbie Amell) is out of prison and working as a janitor at a community center, having cut ties with his former criminal associate Garrett (Stephen Amell). Connor’s attempt at staying out of trouble is destroyed when he’s forced to help 14-year-old Pav (Sirena Gulamgaus) escape from a pack of corrupt officers led by Sergeant King (Alex Mallari Jr.). King uses the newly launched robotic K9’s to track Pav down, while Connor finds himself once again reaching out to Garrett and his crew for help, but can he trust the man who landed him in prison in the first place?”

No release date has yet been set for the movie, but last we heard, it was aiming for a February 2024 release date. Keep an eye out for our preview of the upcoming movie for the latest.

Will this movie ever be released? Fingers crossed that 2024 will be the year it does, after all, we first saw The Mothership listed in Netflix’s 2022 movie preview, and it’s still not out two years later.

Directed and written by Matt Charman (who has since collaborated with Netflix on Treason and a yet-to-be-announced project), the movie follows Sara Morse (played by Halle Berry), who is hunting for her husband after he mysteriously disappeared.

Uglies

Another movie very much M.I.A at the moment is Uglies which originally completed filming back in 2021. Coming from director McG, the movie is based on the novel by Scott Westerfeld that sees Joey King play the role of Tally Youngblood.

The futuristic setting sees everyone having to undergo a compulsory operation that makes everyone pretty.

For time and the fact we don’t have much information on certain titles, here are a few more sci-fi movies on the way:

  • Brad Bird will be directing for Skydance Animation a movie called Ray Gunn which is described as an animated sci-fi movie.
  • Satellite was first announced by Netflix and Higher Ground Productions back in 2021 but has gone quiet since. Would be made in collaboration with Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T Street with Ola Shokunbi writing.
  • Jordan Vogt-Roberts is on board to direct a live-action Gundam movie.
  • A sequel to the Netflix sci-fi Spanish hit The Platform was announced to be in development in May 2023.

Before we leave you, we thought we’d mention a few of the sci-fi books Netflix has optioned over the past year, or we’ve discovered to be in development, but in the case of the latter, it’s unclear what format it’ll eventually be in.

Firstly, we have The Themis Files, which we discovered to be in development as feature films last year with Amblin developing. Based on novels by Sylvain Neuvel, the story revolves around the discovery of giant, ancient alien robots on Earth and the subsequent political, scientific, and existential crises that follow.

We can also see that Netflix optioned many sci-fi books from the beloved American science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler including Imago and Dawn. More to come on this one.

What new sci-fi movie are you looking forward to watching on Netflix? Let us know in the comments.
