As the marquee box office match-up between Oppenheimer and Barbie draws near, the former continues to mount the pressure at warp speed, and it doesn’t look like this monster of a biopic has anything to fear if this explosive new trailer is anything to go by.

Indeed, we knew we were in for a treat when the eldritch entity that is Christopher Nolan’s brain was tasked with telling the story of the man responsible for nuclear weapons, and a mere glimpse at this top-tier blockbuster material has no doubt catapulted the hype to brand new heights.

Oppenheimer follows the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who played one of the most prominent roles in the Manhattan Project as the director of Los Alamos Laboratory, helping to develop nuclear weaponry for use in World War II and subsequently earning him the distinction of “the father of the atomic bomb.”

Beyond the extra-mile ethos that’s always brought by writer-director Nolan (who insisted on recreating a nuclear detonation without the use of CGI), Oppenheimer is packed to the brim with some of the best talent around. Cillian Murphy spearheads the cast as the titular physicist whilst being surrounded by such names as Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Matthew Modine, Jack Quaid, Josh Peck, and Gary Oldman.

Nolan recently called Oppenheimer one of his most challenging projects ever, and anyone familiar with Nolan’s filmography will know right away just how steep of a statement that is, and the film looks more and more prepared to do that statement justice with every passing day.

Oppenheimer will release to theaters on July 21.
