If you’re using Google Translate frequently, you’ll be glad to know that a new, Material You widget has just landed. This widget follows the Material You design language, of course.

This is a huge improvement over what we had before. Up until now, all we could work with was the 1×1 home screen shortcut, which allowed you to create and launch a specific language pairing.

The new Google Translate widget is quite functional, and it looks modern

This widget is much richer, and much more functional, not to mention that it looks better. The widget has two rows, as you can see in the image below. If it looks familiar, there’s a reason for it. Google is offering a similar style with the Google Maps widget.

You’ll note that there are four shortcuts in that second row. Those shortcuts allow you to enter voice, conversation, transcribe, or utilize camera mode, respectively. If you tap on the field to enter text (first row), an app will launch.

The widget is now in line with the Google Translate app, when it comes to the design. The Google Translate app got redesigned last year, and this widget definitely follows in the same footsteps.

It’s not yet available, at least not for everyone

One thing to note is that this widget is not rolling out to everyone, at least not at this moment. The Google Translate v6.34 does not bring it to the table. Google may flip the switch and release it server-side, without an update. On the flip side, it’s also possible that one of the upcoming updates will do so.

How do we know what it will look like if it’s not rolling out yet? Well, Google tweeted out the image above, showing us what it will look like. It is expected to land really soon.

Google should offer such redesigns for some other apps that it has on its roster. The company hasn’t been specifically fast with that lately. Google did transform some apps, but there’s still work to be done. It would be nice to see such widget redesigns across the board as well.
