Apple finally announced the iPhone 16 event yesterday with the event’s tagline being “It’s Glowtime.” The said event will kick off on September 9. Now that official launch dates are out, you can expect more and more leaks and rumors to come your way. In fact, a rumor about Apple’s A18 and A18 Pro’s info has been doing rounds on the internet today, courtesy of a Chinese tipster.
A latest rumor details some key info about Apple’s A18 and A18 Pro SoCs which would feature in the iPhone 16 lineup
Worth noting that previous reports have hinted that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus could use the A18 chip. Whereas, the A18 Pro SoC could be in the beefier iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. The latest rumor has come via a Weibo tipster Fixed focus digital, with screenshots of the tipster’s Weibo post later shared by Mochamad Farido Fanani (@faridofanani96 on X).
According to the tipster, Apple’s A18 and A18 Pro SoCs might feature independent dies. This also implies Apple may not have used any binning techniques for the A18 Pro, which is strange if true. Generally, most companies use this technique as a cost-cutting measure. Besides, the chipsets could have a reduced cache size to save space.
Interestingly, the latest details contradict the previous info about Apple’s A18 and A18 Pro SoC which suggested that both SoCs would feature a bigger cache. And that Apple would do so to accommodate a larger Neural Engine to flawlessly run Apple Intelligence (the company’s in-house Generative Artificial Intelligence aka GenAI).
Per the claims, both SoCs could share the same CPU configuration
The tipster also claims that both SoCs could share the same CPU configuration with varying GPU cores. That means the A18 and A18 Pro would share the 2+4 cluster, with two performance and four power-efficiency cores. There’s no information about the clock speeds and whether they both will share the same architecture.
The only difference is said to be the number of GPU cores with the standard version featuring five. While the ‘Pro’ version SoC for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max would have six cores. Apple followed the same pattern at the time of the iPhone 13 series. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if it happens to be true. Moreover, the information shared above is a rumor, therefore, we suggest taking these details with a grain of salt.
