Samsung is the hottest topic in the smartphone world right now with the launch of the Galaxy S22 phones happening soon. While those phones are hitting the headlines hard, Samsung is also focusing on other phones. Thanks to My Smart Price, we have word on a new patent for a flexible phone with an S Pen.

The flexible phone will be able to house the S Pen internally

One dilemma that Samsung has been battling with is adding the S Pen to its foldable phones. The only way it could do that with the Galaxy Fold3 was by adding on a rather odd-looking case. While the company got some flack for that, it was a step in the right direction.

Now, a new patent just surfaced on WIPO, and it gives us insight into what the company wants to do next with the S Pen for a future flexible phone. With this patent, we get several images that show us a sliding phone. While it can slide, it doesn’t seem like it will extend all that much.

The front of the device will look just like a regular smartphone, and when you activate the sliding feature, the screen will extend just a bit. It looks like when it extends, it will reveal a panel with your notifications, media controls, and other functions.

It will also have an S Pen

The question remains: what about the S Pen? Looking at the images, it looks like the S Pen will be placed on the back of the phone. On the rear of the phone, we see a sizable compartment that will house the stylus. Above the cutout for the S Pen, we see what looks like a button.

This might be the power button. It seems odd for it to be placed there, but both sides of the phone will be occupied by the sliding display.

It’s possible that we could see this in the future

There’s not much more information that we can get from these images at the moment. What we do know is that this isn’t merely a patent application; this was actually awarded to Samsung. That’s a big step when it comes to getting a device out there.

This doesn’t look like the year for this phone. However, we don’t know what next year holds. It’s important to know that flexible phones are still new territory, so any company can come along and flip the script. Samsung holds the title as “King of The Foldable”, but for how much longer?
