Corning, the renowned developer of protective glass for mobile devices, has launched a new product. The company has introduced Gorilla Glass Ceramic, which promises greater resistance and durability against drops thanks to the use of ceramics. Motorola has already confirmed that it will launch at least one smartphone with the new glass this year.
This isn’t the first time Corning has launched a ceramic-based protective glass for Android devices. The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s Gorilla Armor 2 screen protector also boasts the use of this material. However, the new Gorilla Glass Ceramic doesn’t have the anti-reflective properties of Gorilla Armor and Gorilla Armor 2. It’s possible that both glass types will be similar in terms of protection levels.
Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic is more resistant to rough surfaces; Motorola will use it
According to Corning, Gorilla Glass Ceramic offers greater resistance to drops on rough surfaces compared to aluminosilicate protective glass from rivals. In internal tests, a device equipped with Gorilla Glass Ceramic withstood up to ten repeated drops—from one meter—on a 180-grit sandpaper surface. The company claims that other protective glass showed damage in the first drop under the same tests.
Corning also says its new protective glass withstood drops of up to 2.2 meters on a concrete-like surface. Overall, it appears that the implementation of ceramics helps a lot against rough surfaces. The company produces this glass by integrating ceramic nanocrystals through a crystallization tech process at very high temperatures.
It’s noteworthy that ceramic protective glass has been available on iPhones for some time. Corning itself has developed the Ceramic Shield crystals seen on Apple’s devices since 2020. Apple and Corning might have signed a temporary exclusivity agreement for these protectors.
Regarding the Motorola phone that will debut Gorilla Glass Ceramic, its name is unknown. However, it will likely be a premium model. In that case, the Motorola Edge 60 Pro and Ultra seem like good candidates. More Android brands may confirm that they will use the protective glass in the coming weeks or months.
