In the coming weeks, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox will all reach version 100. That sounds like a great achievement for all of them, and it really is; however, there is an issue. There are sites that might have a hard time on the browsers when this happens.

Version 100 of these browsers could pose a problem

Reaching version 100 is a great milestone for any program. Three of the biggest web browsers are going to be hitting that milestone in the coming weeks. This is both good news and bad news. There’s the possibility that some sites on the internet will have issues bringing up sites on these browsers.

This scenario is really ostensible, but it’s possible. When sites read a website, they’re really accustomed to reading browsers with two-digit version numbers. Even though the jump from version 99 to 100 doesn’t seem like much, some sites could run into some trouble. They’re not really programmed to read three-digit version numbers. Some sites might not be able to parse the UA strings sent via HTTP.

The browsers hitting version 100 could actually break some of the sites that we use all the time, but the companies are working on it. According to BGR, the Chrome Developers Twitter account said that the companies are working on the issue. The Tweet only mentioned Chrome and Firefox, but Edge is also going to be reaching version 100, so each browser has work to do.

When will these changes come?

If you use Chrome and/or Edge, your update will come relatively soon. The companies stated that these two browsers will reach version 100 on March 29th, which is just over a month away. As for Firefox, Mozilla stated that it will be updating its browser a bit later. That update is planned for May 3rd. This gives site developers a couple of weeks to work on making their sites compatible with the three-digit version numbers.

Right now, we don’t know which sites will be affected or what will happen to them if they can’t parse the strings. Those using these browsers will need to prepare for some issues when they get to version 100.  What’s good is that all three companies are looking to mitigate this problem before the update hits the browsers.
