Nature will retaliate! This word has a profound meaning, whether it refers to how the modern world is destroying nature or what awaits humankind in the future. In Netflix‘s upcoming monster thriller, a legend only seen in fairy tales descends to wreak havoc on the peaceful world. When most people think of ancient beasts, they picture King Kong, Godzilla, or the Kraken, but Trolls are among the most terrifying.

The upcoming Norwegian film Troll is coming shortly to the streaming service from the director of The Wave (2015) and Tomb Raider (2018), Roar Uthaug. The film looks promising with renowned cast members such as Ine Marie Williams, Mads Sjogard Petterson, Pal Richard Lunderby, and Eric Vorenholt, plus Espen Aukan’s script. Netflix recently released the movie’s full trailer, and here’s a detailed look at it.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The trailer begins with a scene of a house situated in the midst of the mountains. Everything seems calm, and the elderly couple appears to be eating breakfast with hot coffee. Their dog, on the other hand, senses strange fluctuations in the air and continues to bark at it as if to warn their owners or on instinct. In the later scene, everything in the home comes apart, and the couple flees to the basement for safety.

Fortunately, the seemingly impossible has happened, and they’ve survived. Half of their house is demolished, and they see a massive foot twice the size of their house.

As the authorities arrive at the site, they discuss the strange incident, saying, “What if I told you that a thousand years ago, trolls wandered this earth?” Later, we transition to the next scene, where an explosion unfolds in an unspecified mountain region, and people are seen fleeing for their lives. It might be a hint as to what awoke the Troll that nearly destroyed the old couple’s house in the beginning.

Coming back to the first incidence, the researchers are unable to determine what is going on and seek the expertise of a renowned archeologist, Nora Tidemann. Nora deduces what happened when she arrives at the location to investigate the incident with her knowledge. Later in the meeting, she shares her thoughts by stating, “Something came out of a mountain,” to which everyone responds with surprised looks and even jokes referencing King Kong.

Nora, together with another researcher, searches the mountain for additional traces of whatever left that large footprint in front of the old-aged couple’s house. To their dismay, they wind up strolling directly into the creature’s turf, and the commotion they create provokes it to awaken from its slumber. Seeing the Troll, which resembles a small mountain, they flee with their lives on the line, shocked and horrified beyond their expectations.

The scene then switches to a painting, and a man states, “There is a trace of truth in all fairy tales,” implying that Trolls and other creatures were familiar to people in the ancient era. The team sent out to find clues about the Troll, who were later pursued by it, made it out to the city, and the Troll is now officially on the loose.

Following their successful escape, they explore possible countermeasures to deal with the Troll. The only viable solution is to exterminate the Troll before it destroys civilization. The next shot introduces something beyond comprehension and provides the ideal answer to our questions. When Nora and the other expedition members uncover what appears to be the Troll’s lair and gigantic skeletons of humans, they reach a conclusion. It explains the Troll’s existence as well as the previously hidden details from the painting.

The military prepares for a counterattack by gathering all the weapons in their arsenal. Still, even the military’s might, the lethality of the weapons, and whatever they throw at Troll seem to have no effect. We can learn how terrifying ancient Troll is from the words, “We can scare it away with weapons and put pressure on it, but I promise you, nature will push back.” As the Troll’s slaughter continues in the subsequent scenes, the trailer concludes with Nora (Ine Marie William) and Andreas (Kim Falck). They appear to be the movie’s leading characters, drawing the Troll away from the city to safeguard lives and devise a plan to eradicate it once and for all.

The trailer had us on the edge of our seats the entire time. Nordic folklore, as they say, is magical, and the movie captures it perfectly. One thing we admire about the trailer is how they maintained the menacing tone of Godzilla (2014) while adding a slice of thrilling and epic elegance. While there are a few unanswered questions in the trailer, such as why Troll hasn’t awoken after all these years and the history of Ancient people and monsters, we may be lucky enough to find out if the film can spare a few minutes to explore the mysteries.

Troll is set to premiere on Netflix globally on December 1, 2022.
