Netflix has just released a trailer for Paco Plaza‘s Sister Death (Hermana Muerte), a prequel to 2017’s Spanish horror film, Veronica (Verónica). The film serves as an origin story for the titular character, who audiences met through Consuelo Trujillo’s portrayal in Veronica. This time around, Sister Death, or Narcisa, is played by Aria Bedmar. Set in post-war Spain, the upcoming supernatural film centers on the story of Narcisa, a young nun with supernatural powers, who arrives at a convent-turned-school for girls to become a teacher. Per the film’s synopsis, “strange events and the increasingly disturbing situations that torment her will end up leading her to unravel the terrible skein of secrets that surround the convent and lie in wait for its inhabitants.” Check out the haunting trailer below.
Sister Death also stars Almudena Amor, Maru Valdivielso, Luisa Merelas and Chelo Vivares and features Trujillo. The film is written by Jorge Guerricaechevarri, with Veronica director Paco Plaza at the helm. Plaza, also the co-creator of the REC zombie film franchise, is a well-known name in Spanish horror. Although best known for his directing credits, he has also served as a screenwriter, producer, and editor. Plaza’s most recent feature-length horror was 2021’s The Grandmother (La abuela), a supernatural film about a fashion model who returns home to care for her ailing grandmother. The film earned the Jury Prize at the 29th Gérardmer International Fantasy Film Festival.
Sister Death is produced by El Estudio’s Pablo Cruz, Enrique López Lavigne, and Diego Suarez Chialvo, executive produced by Pablo Fernández Masó, and distributed by Netflix. It lands on the streamer on October 27, just in time for Halloween. The film will open the Sitges Film Festival on October 5.
Veronica’s Success and Scare Factor
As a prequel to Veronica, Sister Death has big shoes to fill. Veronica debuted on Netflix in 2018 and quickly gained a reputation as the scariest film on the streamer; some viewers even claimed the film was so horrifying they could not get through it. Veronica is set in Madrid in 1991 and follows a young woman who must protect her younger siblings after attempting to bring back their deceased father through an Ouija board ritual. Maybe even more terrifying, the film is loosely based on the case of Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro, a teenage girl who mysteriously died after using an Ouija board to contact a classmate’s late boyfriend.
While audiences may have been spooked, critics were thrilled with Plaza’s feature. The film amassed critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including seven Goya award nominations (including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay), winning the Goya for Best Sound.
Veronica stars Sandra Escacena alongside Claudia Placer, Bruna González, Iván Chavero, and Ana Torrent. The film was co-written by Plaza and Fernando Navarro. It is currently available to stream on Netflix, providing ample time to get acquainted with Sister Death before the prequel debuts on the streamer on October 27.
