Capturing the Killer Nurse is directed by Tim Travers Hawkins (XY Chelsea). It is produced by Robin Ockleford and executive produced by Henri Singer, Susannah Price, and Charles Graeber.

Charlie Cullen was an experienced registered nurse, trusted and beloved by his colleagues at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey. He was also one of history’s most prolific serial killers, with a body count potentially numbering in the hundreds across multiple medical facilities in the Northeast. Based on The Good Nurse, the doc reveals the twisted story behind Cullen’s hidden spree of murders. Using audio from Cullen himself and emotional sit-downs with those closest to the events – including whistle-blower and fellow nurse Amy Loughren, the detectives who cracked the case, author Graeber, and family members of the victims – the film traces how the truth was initially too shocking for anyone to comprehend, and how Cullen’s horrific actions underscore an even bigger danger still lurking in our healthcare system.

The Good Nurse is based on the book by Charles Graeber, and the movie is directed by Tobias Lindholm and written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns. It follows nurse Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain) as she helps with an investigation into strange deaths that keep happening in her ward at the hospital, horrified to learn that co-worker Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), someone she’s gotten close to through their work, may be responsible.

“The fact that he didn’t seem to fulfill the stereotypes necessarily, but also having spent time with the real Amy beforehand, she really emphasized the truth of their friendship, the depth of their friendship,” Redmayne has said of what made playing Charles Cullen so interesting for the movie, via A.V. Club. “Her love for him was very real. And that was intriguing because it meant that for Jessica [Chastain] and I, when she was so strong about that, that that became the thing. But she was also really interesting in that she described him as she only ever saw this monster twice, and that it was a different human being and that this thing glazed over him. She describes it as dissociative, and so even though I’d read all about his background and his upbringing, which is woven with trauma, hearing [from] this person that was so close to him [that he] was two different people was an insight.”

The Good Nurse is currently streaming on Netflix. Capturing the Killer Nurse will be released on Netflix on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022.
