Netflix is ramping up its mobile game efforts by bringing the Grand Theft Auto series to subscribers. Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular video game franchises on the planet, thanks in part to the incredibly popular Grand Theft Auto V. The sixth mainline game is also currently in development and will be announced next month.
All that popularity was of course built off the backs of giants. Specifically Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. These were all released during the PlayStation 2 era and were exceptionally popular for their time. They’ve also all at one time or another already made the jump to mobile for $5 a pop. Since then, they’ve been re-released to console and PC via the Definitive Edition Trilogy pack. And it’s that pack that’s coming to Netflix.
Netflix subscribers can play all three Grand Theft Auto trilogy games starting next month
You can go ahead and mark your calendars, because Netflix confirms the Definitive Edition trilogy is coming to subscribers on December 14. Since these are part of a trilogy bundle you’ll presumably only have to download one game. If that’s the case, then players would launch what would be the ‘Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and then choose which game they want to play from a main menu.
If you were to buy this game pack on console or PC via Steam you’d be paying $59.99 for it. Whereas with a Netflix subscription, it’s available at no additional charge beyond the subscription fee you’re probably already paying anyway. That in itself probably makes the GTA trilogy bundle the best value for any game Netflix has ever picked up. Although, if GTA isn’t your thing, Netflix has more than 80 other games already on offer.
Including a personal favorite of mine, Laya’s Horizon. What is perhaps more intriguing is the scope of this game partnership. Rockstar isn’t the first major studio that Netflix has made a deal with. It already offers games from Ubisoft, Riot, and SNK. However, this partnership with Rockstar showcases Netflix’s willingness to entice gamers by bringing in well-known franchises.
