Dunkirk star and musician Harry Styles stars as a gay policeman in the 1950s in the eerie first trailer for Amazon’s romantic drama, My Policeman. Released courtesy of Prime Video, My Policeman features Styles as one-third of a love triangle, as a police officer attempting to hide his sexuality from the judgments of the outside world.

An ominous air hangs over the first footage from My Policeman, which has been described as a “beautifully crafted story of forbidden love and changing social conventions.” My Policeman follows three young people – policeman Tom (Harry Styles), teacher Marion (Emma Corrin), and museum curator Patrick (David Dawson)– as they embark on an emotional journey in 1950s Britain. Flashing forward to the 1990s, Tom (Linus Roache), Marion (Gina McKee), and Patrick (Rupert Everett) are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past.

Based on the book by Bethan Roberts, director Michael Grandage has crafted a visually transporting, heart-stopping portrait of three people caught up in the shifting tides of history, liberty, and forgiveness. Led by Harry Styles as Tom Burgess, Emma Corrin as Marion Taylor, and David Dawson as Patrick Hazlewood, My Policeman will jump around in time between the 1950s and the 1990s, exploring the lives of these three people and the romantic web that they slowly get caught up in.

Harry Styles is Being Tipped for Awards for His Performance in My Policeman

Known for his work in pop music and his time as part of the hugely popular boy band One Direction, Harry Styles does not have too many acting credits to his name. Not yet, anyway. Styles impressed in director Christopher Nolan’s World War II outing, Dunkirk, before being introduced to the MCU as one of the Eternals. Styles is also due to star alongside Florence Pugh in the upcoming thriller Don’t Worry Darling, but it is his performance in My Policeman that is currently getting all the applause.

Styles is being tipped for award glory for his portrayal of Tom Burgess, with My Policeman director Michael Grandage recently revealing how impressed he was by Styles’ commitment. “He had read the script so many times that he knew every single beat of it at that meeting. I found that incredibly impressive. He knew other people’s lines; he knew all of his lines. He knew why he wanted to talk about it, why one scene worked this way and another worked another way,” said Grandage in an interview with Vanity Fair.

His limited experience worked well for Grandage, who explained how Styles’ inexperience became innocence on screen. Something which perfectly reflected the character of Tom. “Because he hasn’t done much, he hasn’t developed the ability to work out tricks or even lie. He can only do it truthfully and as he knows it,” Grandage added, comparing Styles to the likes of Albert Finney. “They just bring themselves to the role, and it seems to be very uncomplicated in the way they achieve it and Harry had that.”

My Policeman, coming to select theaters on October 21 and Prime Video on November 4.
