The Mozilla Team has reached a significant milestone with Firefox 100, the browser’s 100th release. As one would expect, this release brings a few nifty features to both web and mobile versions of Firefox.
Mozilla announced the milestone on its blog (via XDA) while detailing some of the inclusions with the new release. For starters, the picture-in-picture (PiP) functionality on Firefox now supports captions and subtitles. Mozilla said the feature is currently available on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, and streaming sites that support WebVTT.
Firefox is also getting a first-run language switcher which Mozilla describes as a “new feature that makes it easier for people to use their preferred language.” Mozilla says Firefox will recognize the device language preference and ask if you’d like to switch. Credit card autofill, on the other hand, has been expanded to regions like the UK, France, and Germany. It was previously limited to users in North America.
Firefox for Android is getting a handful of new features
Meanwhile, the latest version of Firefox for Android will organize your URL history more efficiently by removing duplicate URL entries. Tabs will get some minor tweaks as well, while unused tabs will become inactive after 14 days. Such tabs will move to a separate section named ‘Inactive Tabs.’
Firefox for Android is also getting the HTTPS-only mode from Firefox Focus, Mozilla’s privacy-oriented browser. “We thought that our Firefox for Android app users could also benefit from this privacy-first feature and today HTTPS-only mode is available on Android,” Mozilla added.
No major upgrade is complete without some visual changes. Mozilla is adding two new browser wallpapers for the Android and iOS iterations of Firefox, namely Beach vibes and Twilight hills. The new wallpapers are accessible to all users across the globe via Settings on Firefox.
Mozilla has come a long way since the days of Phoenix in 2002. The service later evolved into Firebird before taking shape as Firefox in 2004. Mozilla’s browser now serves as a viable alternative to the likes of Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Microsft Edge (formerly IE), among others. Be sure to download the latest version of Firefox from Mozilla’s official site.
