The pre-order performance of the PS5 Pro is reportedly surpassing that of the PS4 Pro, suggesting that Sony’s latest pro console is more popular than the previous version.
That wouldn’t be too hard to believe, given the heavy level of marketing Sony seems to have done for it already. And in such a short time no less. Sony announced the PS5 Pro officially back at the beginning of September. It was just recently released on November 7. So it only had about two months to promote the mid-generation console refresh before it was launched.
In that time Sony was able to move enough pre-order units that are helping the PS5 Pro start off strong. Whether or not it will be able to continue with strong sales is still unclear. But it doesn’t look like Sony will have too much trouble securing more sales.
Sony President talks PS5 pre-order performance
With regard to the PS5 Pro’s performance during the pre-order phase, Sony President Hiroki Totoki said that pre-orders were “performing slightly stronger” than the PS4 Pro did. Totoki didn’t mention details about specific numbers. It’s also mentioned that the PS5 Pro’s $699 price tag seemingly didn’t hurt sales. The price is high compared to the PS4 Pro. But it doesn’t look like it had a negative impact on the pre-orders. Specifically, Totoki states that the console’s high price isn’t believed to be adversely affecting the product’s sales plan.”
The PS5 Pro is retailing for $699.99 and for many vocal consumers, this was going to be a deal breaker. The pre-order success suggests that may not have really been the case. Details about the PS5 Pro pre-orders were brought during Sony’s recent conference. Which was around the same time it published its second-quarter financial results for 2024.
In these financial results, Sony mentions that PS5 sales in the second quarter were down overall from the same time last year. However, Tokotki still believes that the company is on track to meet its sales target for the console by the end of the fiscal year. Sony lumps the PS5 and the PS5 Pro into one unit category for this. So between the PS5 and the PS5 Pro, Sony believes it won’t have too much trouble reaching its target of 18 million units sold.
Games still make up Sony’s biggest portion of gaming-related profit
While the PS5 Pro has done well with pre-order numbers, games themselves are the biggest part of Sony’s success of late. During its second-quarter financial results, software sales pull Sony ahead. Speaking of games, the PS5 Pro will support enhancements to over 50 titles at launch. This includes games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, No Man’s Sky, and several others. It wouldn’t be surprising if this detail helped push some consumers to take the plunge on the pre-order.
PS5 Pro sales may increase now that we’re also in the middle of the holiday shopping season. Especially with the promise of enhanced game performance.
