Academy Award winner Jared Leto transforms into Morbius the Living Vampire in the final trailer for Sony’s next installment in their shared Spider-Man universe. Morbius, which is due for release at the beginning of April, will introduce Leto as the Sony-Verse’s latest antihero, a scientist who becomes a blood-thirsty vampire following an experiment. When will these Marvel characters learn that experimenting on oneself never works out the way you’d think?

Morbius will introduce one of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters as House of Gucci and Blade Runner 2049 star Jared Leto is transformed into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease, transforming the good doctor into a conflicted monster.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Morbius’s friend who suffers from the same rare blood disease and eventually becomes the supervillain, Hunger; Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, a scientist and Morbius’s fiancée; Jared Harris as a professor and Morbius’s mentor; and Tyrese Gibson and Al Madrigal as Simon Stroud and Alberto Rodriguez, a pair of FBI agents hunting Morbius.

Morbius first appeared as an enemy of Spider-Man in Marvel Comics’ “The Amazing Spider-Man” #101 back in 1971. Morbius will continue the Sony shared universe, which so far has revolved around fellow Spider-Man villain, Venom. Alongside both Morbius and Venom, a movie based around Kraven the Hunter is also now in development.

With Marvel now very much embedded in the madness of the cinematic multiverse, there are a number of questions surrounding where Morbius will sit within the ongoing franchise. Footage so far has included clues relating to the worlds of Venom, The Amazing Spider-Man, and the MCU. The biggest clue comes courtesy of the involvement of Michael Keaton, who is set to reprise the role of Adrian Toomes AKA The Vulture alongside Jared Leto’s vampire antihero. Keaton last appeared in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, suggesting that Morbius could eventually come face-to-face with Tom Holland’s web-slinger.

Leto himself has teased just some of the studio’s plan for this ever-growing assortment of Spider-Man villains, hinting at the eventual emergence of The Sinister Six. “In the film version of Morbius that we’re bringing to you now, he’s also a part of a much larger universe,” the actor said. “If you’ve seen the last Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, you know the Multiverse has officially opened, and there’s all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up, thrive, and maybe even nurture their more sinister intents. That’s all I’m gonna say for right now.”

Morbius is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 1, 2022, having been delayed from an initial July 2020 date due to the ongoing global circumstances. Find out more about the film at the official website.
