Lionsgate has just released another Moonfall trailer, and they have been holding out on us! Patrick Wilson, Halle Berry and John Bradley are the doomed heroes taking on the moon monsters in the hopes of saving our world from total extinction. She and her team set off on a mission to save our planet but find out, not only is the moon not made of cheese, it’s got some tricks up its moon sleeves. The tone of the previous trailers has been dark and more sinister, with Donald Sutherland declaring it’s too late to save the planet. The new offering brings high action, comedy, and galactic explosions! Director Roland Emmerich has gone full Roland Emmerich!
When we hear the name Roland Emmerich, we have a pretty good idea of the kind of film we’re getting. The filmmaker does not do subtle. It looks like we can expect a new installment of IMAX-worthy cinematic landscapes and out-of-this-world sci-fi adventures and thrills. Emmerich explains that his inspiration for Moonfall was derived from the Hollow Moon hypothesis. After reading the 2005 book Who Built the Moon?, he was inspired by the idea of time-traveling humans building the moon to track Earth’s time. Speaking of the Hollow Moon theory, Emmerich explains, “I immediately realized, oh, my God, this could very well be one of these conspiracies where you can have something really traumatic happen, meaning the moon is getting out of orbit and falling on Earth. But at the same time, you learn that the moon is not what you think it is. It’s always a cool way to get into a movie.”
The official synopsis reads: “The Moon. It controls our nights, our days, the seasons, and our ocean tides. And since the beginning of humankind, its phases stood as a symbol of enlightenment, inner knowledge – and our own immortality. Until now. Suddenly and without warning a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface, unlock its secrets, and save our planet from annihilation. But first they must battle an unknown and unfathomable power that will challenge everything we know about the moon, the universe, and ourselves.”
John Bradley is delivering the comedy up on a gravity-defying platter. The Game of Thrones star has spoken about his stand-up comedy beginnings, and it shows. Surrounded by pensive faces and doomsday news, his character seems to be, if not a little reluctantly, game for the moon mission. Alongside John Bradley as our conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman, stars Halle Berry as Jo Fowler and Patrick Wilson as Brian Harper portraying astronauts, Michael Peña as Tom Lopez, Charlie Plummer as Sonny Harper and Donald Sutherland as Holdenfield.
Moonfall is on a crash course to theaters in IMAX on February 4, 2022.
