Illumination has long since figured out the perfect blend of charm and comedy with stellar animation in many of their biggest animated hits, particularly The Super Mario Bros. Movie which remains the highest grossing movie of the year so far. Their next upcoming comedic adventure feature Migration is already showing much of the same promise, and a full-length trailer for the film has officially dropped today, giving eager fans a good look at potentially the funniest tale of a bird family flying south for what they hope is a vacation.
Migration is the latest vibrant adventure comedy from Illumination helmed by French director Benjamin Renner, who was brought aboard to harness his talent with animation and comic book art into a completely computer-animated film complete with fully visualized rendered backgrounds, rather than photorealism seen in other animated films. He also took inspiration from particularly expressive animals in the wild in order to develop the film’s eccentric characters. The project is written by Mike White, who is also working on the next installment in the Despicable Me animated franchise.
Chris Meledandri, who has worked on the majority of Illumination’s films over the years, is back once more as producer. The premise of the film centers on a charming family of Mallard ducks who feel like they’re missing out on the world around their pond, and decide to embark on their own migration from New England all the way to Jamaica. Starring in the film are Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), Elizabeth Banks (Brightburn), Awkwafina (The Little Mermaid), Keegan Michael-Key (The Super Mario Bros. Movie), David Mitchell (Greed), Carol Kane (The Dead Don’t Die), Danny DeVito (Dumbo), and young newcomers Caspar Jennings and Tresi Gazal.
A Family of Ducks Decide on a Migration Vacation
The trailer opens with a tight-knit family of Mallard ducks who live at an incredibly scenic and tranquil pond in New England. One day a flock of migrating birds suddenly swoops in to settle at the pond for the season, and the Mallards eagerly decide to get acquainted. Mack (Nanjiani) the father is a bit anxious about the newcomers, while his feathered wife Pam (Banks) and their kids Dax (Jennings) and Gwen (Gazal) are excited and curious about where they’ve come from. The prospect of migration to somewhere far away, like a vacation, enamors Pam, while Mack tries to dissuade them by saying they have everything they need right at the pond.
The adventure-adverse uncle Dan (DeVito) shares in Mack’s disinterest. Pam declares that she doesn’t want to miss out on life, so Mack reluctantly agrees and the five of them set out on a long adventure through New York City with Jamaica as their destination. However, they find themselves hugely sidetracked by New York’s terrifying metropolis, and struggle to find the safest way out. With Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” playing in the background, they call on the local bird life for help, as the bustling city becomes an adventure in itself.
Migration flies in theaters everywhere just in time for Christmas on December 22.
