Xbox is green in more ways than one, as the new Xbox Remix Special Edition controller is made partly from recycled junk. Today Microsoft unveiled the latest version of its Xbox Core Wireless Controller, the Remix Special Edition.
While it looks like every other controller Xbox puts out (save for color), it’s actually a tad bit unique. These controllers are made partly from reclaimed CDs, water jugs, and parts from other controllers. The really cool thing is that each Remix Special Edition is unique from one another. And not just the other versions of the standard Xbox controller.
Microsoft points out that each one of these controllers has its own look and feel. This is due to the process of mixing post-consumer recycled resin with regrind that contains previously molded colored parts. The result is a controller that comes with custom earth-tone colors and “subtle variations, swirling, markings, and texturing.” So no two of these specific controllers are ever the same. Even if the differences are very subtle. The controller also comes with the rechargeable battery pack.
The Xbox Remix Special Edition controller celebrates Earth Day
Earth Day is almost upon us and this is a day to celebrate the planet we all call home. This takes many forms, and for Xbox it comes in the form of putting out a controller that uses recycled plastic to cut down on the amount created. Part of that process, which Microsoft calls Regrind, takes parts from older Xbox One controllers that are leftover. It then breaks down those parts into raw materials that can be used for these new controllers.
And because it uses a rechargeable battery pack, you don’t have to buy and toss out disposables. The pack lasts for up to 30 hours on a single charge, Microsoft says. You can grab these directly from the Xbox store for $84.99 via pre-order, with a full launch coming on April 18.
