Microsoft announced the integration of Bing Search into ChatGPT, Engadget reports.
ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI is currently owned by Microsoft after the tech giant invested over $10 billion into it. The investment would allow Microsoft to integrate ChatGPT into its Bing search engine and turn it into a rival to Google Search.
The company is now taking a reverse approach by integrating Bing Search into ChatGPT. As a result, Bing will serve as the “default search experience” for ChatGPT. This integration can benefit both services. As for the ChatGPT, it can provide more insightful information by leveraging Bing capabilities. The chatbot previously used individual plugins to extract information.
Bing Search is coming to ChatGPT as the default search engine
Serving as the default search choice of ChatGPT also allows Bing to extend its scope and provide services to tens of millions of new users who traditionally relied on Google. This is an obvious threat to Google’s reign in the search market.
Microsoft has recently opened Bing AI for public testing and ditched the waitlist. The Bing AI is updated with tons of new features to offer a smooth AI experience while focusing on productivity. For example, it can summarize large files like PDFs and websites. Microsoft also added support for 100 new languages in Bing Image Creator.
Adding support for third-party plugins was one of Microsoft’s promises to developers. The company is now fulfilling its promise by allowing developers to create and submit their plugins for ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Bing, etc. Additionally, companies like Expedia, Zillow, and Klarna are added to Bing in-chat plugin options.
Third-party plugins could enhance any service functionality, and Microsoft wants to rely on developers’ creativity to gain a competitive edge over Google Bard. The tech giant added that the plugin platform goes live in the “coming weeks.” Lastly, Microsoft confirmed that free ChatGPT accounts would soon be able to access Bing.
While Microsoft is arming ChatGPT and Bing to battle Google, some sources have recently reported that OpenAI might release an open-source language model. The new model is unlikely to be a rival for ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month.
