Microsoft is bringing its ChatGPT-powered Bing AI chatbot to its SwiftKey keyboard app for Android. The latest beta version of the app adds a new Bing button to the left end of the keyboard’s top row. Tapping it will let you start conversations with the generative AI tech that uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 language model.
The Bing AI chatbot on SwiftKey can be used in two different ways: Tone and Chat. The former option rewrites any text you type in four different tones. You can have your message rephrased in Professional, Social Post, Casual, and Polite tones with just one tap (via). The length of the message more or less remains the same, though SwiftKey adds relevant hashtags to the Social Post version of the message.
While the Tone option doesn’t make much use of ChatGPT’s generative AI, the Chat option does precisely what its name implies. It opens up a new sheet that almost covers the whole of your phone’s screen and lets you have conversations with the AI chatbot. You can select between Creative, Balanced, and Precise conversational styles and start chatting, either via voice or text input. The app lets you copy the responses to your clipboard if you want to save them for future reference.
Microsoft adds Bing AI shortcut to SwiftKey
In addition to giving you quick access to Microsoft’s generative AI tech, the new Bing button on SwiftKey can also serve as a shortcut to search the web. The Search option shows up alongside Tone and Chat when you tap on the button. This integration essentially makes the Bing app redundant, particularly if you used it for accessing the AI chatbot. You now have the chatbot at your fingertips in pretty much every app. All you need is to make SwiftKey your default keyboard and find a text field in apps.
That said, Microsoft is just starting to push this update for the SwiftKey app on the beta channel for Android users. The company’s CTO of mobile and commerce Pedram Rezaei says the new feature is “slowly rolling out”. It may take a while before the Windows giant brings it to everyone, including iPhone users.
