The Adults is a comedy drama film helmed by Dustin Guy Defa, who both wrote and directed the project. While mostly known so far for his short film work, Defa previously directed the feature Person to Person, which also starred Michael Cera along with Tavi Gevinson (Gossip Girl), Abbi Jacobson (Disenchantment), and Philip Baker Hall (The Last Word). Producers on the film include Julia Thompson, Jon Read, Allison Rose Carter, Ted Schaefer, Hannah Dweck, and lead actor Michael Cera. Starring with him are Hannah Gross (Mindhunter), Sophia Lillis (Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), and Wavyy Jonez.

The premise of the film revolves around a young man named Eric (Michael Cera), who has a concerning addiction to poker playing that has pulled him away from much of his family, namely his two sisters Rachel (Hannah Gross) and Maggie (Sophia Lillis). After their mother’s death and Eric’s personal escape from the grief for three long years, Rachel’s relationship with him has especially since gone sour. However, the younger and more aspirational Maggie excitedly welcomes the reunion and does her best to repair the camaraderie between the three of them.

The trailer opens with Eric (Cera) meeting his older sister Rachel (Gross) at home for the first time in three years, and from the get-go she drags him through the mud over his extended absence from the family. She calls him out for not knowing she dyed her hair a year ago, as he’d never offer to Facetime or Skype any of them. He also gets together with old friends of his, now married with kids, and they ask how everything is with his family. He laments that Rachel lives by herself, while Maggie briefly tried college and then quit.

aggie opens up to him about how Rachel has coped with their mother’s death, or hasn’t rather, dealing with bouts of depression that have apparently only been made worse by someone named Nathan. Eric then feels a desire to bond again with Rachel, deciding to extend his brief trip and stays with her at home. They butt heads over trivial things like chores, and Eric still sneaks out to play poker at night with friends, but he finds ways to start reconnecting with both his sisters that ultimately bring them closer at a time when they need it most.

After first showing at the Berlin Film Festival back in February, The Adults will premiere later this year at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, before premiering in theaters on August 18.
