First announced back in April 2023, we now have our first trailer for Merry Little Batman, which hits Prime Video on December 8th. Fans of Cartoon Network’s Regular Show will recognize the animation style, as the project is helmed by Mike Roth, who was the creative director on the long-running series which ended back in 2017. Watch the trailer for Merry Little Batman below.

You can also check out the official synopsis for the Batman project below:

“This Christmas, Damian Wayne wants to be a Super Hero like his dad—the one and only Batman. When Damian is left home alone while Batman takes on Gotham’s worst Super-Villains on Christmas Eve, he stumbles upon a villainous plot to steal Christmas and leaps at the chance to save the day.”

Luke Wilson (Old School) will voice the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in Merry Little Batman, and the animated film will also feature Yonas Kibreab (Sweet Tooth) as Damian Wayne, James Cromwell (Succession) as Alfred, with David Hornsby (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) voicing Joker.

In the trailer, we see a much younger version of Damian Wayne than is showcased in the DC Comics, and that’s definitely by design. Speaking with EW, Mike Roth mentioned how he wanted Merry Little Batman to feel like a children’s Christmas tale.

“Because it’s a Christmas story, telling it through the eyes of a child seemed apropos. Typically, Damian is a teenager who struggles with good and evil. While this was an interesting idea that was initially explored, we landed on a younger Damian. We decided to turn the clock back on Damian’s petulant nature to a time when he was more innocent and wide-eyed.

In a press release at the time of the announcement of Merry Little Batman, head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, Vernon Sanders, commented on the project:

“Batman: The Animated Series helped pioneer in the evolution of superhero storytelling and defined the Dark Knight for a generation. Batman: Caped Crusader will no doubt continue that tradition and, alongside Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family, we’re thrilled to collaborate with Warner Bros. Animation to offer a variety of takes of the Batman mythos to our global Prime Video customers.”

Along with the plot being akin to Home Alone, Merry Little Batman brings us some classic Batman villains to act in the role of the Wet Bandits. In the trailer, we see Poison Ivy, Bane, Penguin, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, and of course, the Joker. While he’s most recently been portrayed in the DC universe as a psychopathic loner thanks to Todd Phillips’ 2019 film, Roth and company wanted to put their own, kid-friendly spin on the famous antagonist.

“He is heavily inspired by Bob Fosse’s portrayal of the Snake in the 1974 version of The Little Prince. Our Joker is a perfect foe to a little kid because he is basically like a big, peevish child himself — coaxing, cunning, and apt to rapid and irrational tantrums. His temperament swings from merry to murderous faster than you can say, ‘Holy nightmare, Batman.’”

Merry Little Batman arrives just in time to please kids for the holiday season, which will also see the release of other kid-friendly, live-action films such as The Naughty Nine on Disney+, Candy Cane Lane, also streaming on Prime Video, as well as Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson.
