The trailer for the Mean Girls musical movie has finally been officially released. The film is (deep breath) based on the stage musical of the same name, which was of course based on the film of the same name, which was based on the non-fiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Both film versions of Mean Girls, plus the book for the musical, have been written by Tina Fey, who also plays the supporting role of Ms. Norbury in both the 2004 outing and the upcoming musical version. A new synopsis has also been released alongside the trailer:
“From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the modern classic, MEAN GIRLS. New student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.”
The 2004 film starred Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron who, after moving back to the states from Africa, has to make the transition from homeschool to high school. She meets a wide variety of colorful characters, such as school outcasts Janis Ian (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian Leigh (Daniel Franzese). Cady also meets the Plastics, the school’s popular girls who are led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams). After being wronged by Regina, Cady teams up with Janis and Damian for revenge.

The music and lyrics for the stage musical, which premiered in 2017, comes courtesy of Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin. The musical will keep much of the plot from the movie intact, albeit with some slight variations. Beyond the obvious addition of musical numbers, the story has been updated to incorporate modern technology and some of the character’s surnames have been changed. There’s also more backstory for Aaron, played in the movie by Jonathan Bennett, and who is the reason why Cady and Regina start feuding. There’s also some slight tweaking to Janis’ history with Regina and the reason why she’d want to take down the “Queen Bee.”

The Mean Girls musical will star Reneé Rapp as Regina, who’ll be reprising the role after playing it on stage. Rapp will be joined by Angourie Rice as Cady, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis, and Jaquel Spivey as Damian. The other two members of the Plastics, Gretchen and Karen, will be played by Bebe Wood and Avantika Vandanapu. In addition to Fey reprising her role, Tim Meadows will also once again be playing Principal Duvall, who did indeed leave the south side to have to deal with all the girls in school rioting.
In a previous interview, Richmond said that something they would try to do for the movie is to update the score slightly, with the goal being to do a fresher take on the material and to reach a wider audience.
“What we’re trying to do [with the movie] is take the score that sounds like a Broadway score — in a good way — and [give] the movie a fresher palette. To make it sound more like stuff you want to listen to on Spotify, as opposed to when you’re sitting eighth row at a Broadway show or the Pantages.”
Mean Girls the musical is set to be released January 12, 2024.
