You can also check out the official synopsis for May December below, which offers a lot of detail regarding what the movie is all about.
“Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, Gracie Atherton-Yu and her husband Joe (twenty-three years her junior) brace themselves for their twins to graduate from high school. When Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry comes to spend time with the family to better understand Gracie, who she will be playing in a film, family dynamics unravel under the pressure of the outside gaze.
Joe, never having processed what happened in his youth, starts to confront the reality of life as an empty-nester at thirty-six. And as Elizabeth and Gracie study each other, the similarities and differences between the two women begin to ebb and flow. Set in picturesque and comfortable Camden, Maine, May December is an exploration of truth, storytelling, and the difficulties (or impossibility) of fully understanding another person.”
Loosely inspired by the real-life scandal surrounding teacher Mary Kay Letourneau, May December is directed by Todd Haynes from a screenplay by Samy Burch. Alongside Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, May December stars Charles Melton, D.W. Moffett, Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, and Cory Michael Smith.
May December Has Been Met With Rave Reviews
May December premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival back in May, and has been met with critical acclaim from those in attendance. The movie currently sits at an impressive 90% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the performance from Portman, Moore, and Charles Melton as Joe.
Screen Rant’s Brittany Witherspoon awards May December a 4/5, and applauds May December’s approach to the characters and the entertaining torment with which the movie tells the story.
“An intense analysis on character, scandal, and deceit, May December is delightfully tormenting and entertaining.”
The praise continues courtesy of indieWire’s David Ehrlich who says, “Haynes’ tonal playfulness has sometimes been overshadowed by the unerring consistency of his emotional textures, but here, in the funniest and least “stylized” of his films, it’s easier than ever to appreciate his genius,” with Peter Debruge of Variety saying, “Withholding moral judgment as best he can, Haynes keeps things more emotional than intellectual, trusting audiences to do that unpacking on their own.”
Finally, Collider’s Therese Lacson took some criticism with May December, but ultimately found it to be a worthy experience thanks to the cast.
“While Haynes isn’t at his best with May December, a talented cast and an intriguing story makes the film an entertaining exercise all the same.”
May December is scheduled to be released in select theaters in the United States on November 17, 2023, before streaming on Netflix on December 1, 2023.
