R.L. Stine just recently confirmed that Fear Street: Prom Queen was in development at Netflix, with pre-production having now started on the movie. What’s on Netflix has learned that Matthew Palmer has been tapped to direct the new feature film with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage writing.
The Canadian Director’s Guild first posted about Fear Street: Prom Queen in early January 2024, and we quickly reported on everything we knew about the project and the source material.
Shortly after, R.L. Stine took to Twitter to confirm the new project, saying:
“Movie News: I can finally announce that a new Fear Street movie is about to go into production for Netflix. It’s based on my Fear Street book, The Prom Queen. Good news!”

You may recall that Above the Line first reported in December 2022 that Chloe Okuna, who was just hot off the 2022 hit Watcher, was originally attached to direct the project. This isn’t the case any longer.
We understand that Matt Palmer (also by Matthew Palmer) is set to direct the Fear Street movie. Palmer previously worked on the criminally underrated Netflix Original movie Callibre released on the service back in 2018.
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who have worked together on The O.C. and Gossip Girl, plus more recently Apple TV+’s City on Fire and The CW’s Nancy Drew, will serve as the writers on the new Netflix movie.
Chernin Entertainment is producing Fear Street: Prom Queen for Netflix. They’re currently under an extensive overall deal for Netflix.
Filming, according to the Canadian Director’s Guild, is scheduled to kick off on March 25th, 2024, and run through to May 10th, 2024.
It’s unclear whether the movie will be ready for release for Halloween this year. We do know that Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein won’t be coming out this year, but Netflix does have a few other horror titles up its sleeve for the festive period, such as the recently acquired It’s What’s Inside, which it picked up from Sundance.
What’s on Netflix can also confirm that the new movie is set in the 1980s and is not part of the original trilogy, released in the summer of 2021, in any form.
