When it was first announced that Margot Robbie would be starring in a Barbie movie that was directed by Greta Gerwig and co-starring Ryan Gosling as Ken, the world stopped for a moment and collectively shouted “What?” Now the first full trailer is here to bring all of your Barbie expectations to life, in all the ways you didn’t expect. While there have been plenty of iterations of Barbie put on screen in the last, mainly in animated form, this is unlike any Barbie project before it. Check out the trailer below.

One thing that is clear is that anyone going into this movie expecting to see a bog-standard Barbie being nice to her neighbors and driving around town in her happy little life may be in for a surprise because this is not that movie. As well as featuring Robbie in the title role and Gosling as Ken, there are many other stars also appearing as alternative versions of the characters, including Shang-Chi star Simu Liu, who previously praised the movie as one of the best scripts he has ever read. He noted:

“It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read. I think it’ll surprise a lot of people because I think a lot of people get cynical when they see Mattel or they see Barbie. The first thought I had after reading the script was how did the hell did they get Mattel to sign off on this, because this is not the kind of movie that corporate overlords sign off on. This is the type of movie that I love, unabashedly. It’s smart, it’s subversive, and it’s meta, and it makes fun of itself. How did they understand it enough to green light it? I think that’s props to not only Greta but also to Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley who produced it.”

As you would expect, there are plenty of bright, vibrant colors in Barbie’s world, and Margot Robbie has been seen wearing many of them in various set photos. While it all seems like fun, there was certainly a down side to filming in the streets dressed as Barbie. She said:

“I can’t tell you how mortified we were, by the way. We look like we’re like laughing and having fun, but we’re dying on the inside. Dying. I was like, this is the most humiliating moment of my life. I mean, I knew that we had some exteriors to shoot in L.A. I knew once you were doing exteriors, you’re gonna get papped. There’s probably going to be a little crowd of people who are going to take notice because, you know, we stand out a little bit in those outfits. So I knew there was going to be a little bit of attention, and probably some photos would get out there, but not like it did. It was like mad. It was like hundreds of people watching all time.”

Barbie comes with an all-star cast including Will Ferrell, Nicola Coughlan, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Emma Mackey, Sharon Rooney, and Hari Nef. The film will be released in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
