Idris Elba is back as DCI John Luther in the first look at Luther: The Fallen Sun.

Something’s coming in the first look at the upcoming Netflix outing, Luther: The Fallen Sun. Revealing Idris Elba in his return as the unorthodox detective John Luther, the teaser trailer (which comes via NetflixUK) is mostly just a close-up of Elba’s leading man face. However, it does confirm that Luther: The Fallen Sun will play in select theaters in February before landing on the streaming platform in March. You can check out the teaser trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun below.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is the epic continuation of the award-winning television saga, which first began in 2010 and ran for five intense seasons. Reimagined for film, Luther: The Fallen Sun begins with a gruesome serial killer terrorizing London, and all while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars.

Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job. And, this being DCI John Luther, that job will be finished by any means necessary.

Luther creator Neil Cross returns to write Luther: The Fallen Sun, with Jamie Payne, who directed several episodes of Luther Season 5, at the helm. Led by Idris Elba, Luther: The Fallen Sun also stars Cynthia Erivo, Dermot Crowley, Jess Liaudin, Lauryn Ajufo, and Natasha Patel, with War for the Planet of the Apes and Andor star Andy Serkis set to star as the main antagonist, David Robey, a tech billionaire who uses surveillance technology to manipulate and kill civilians.

Luther: The Fallen Sun will find the seemingly unstoppable detective exactly where he does not want to be – behind bars. So, it seems he’s not quite so unstoppable after all. Elba has revealed some insight into Luther: The Fallen Sun and how the character will deal with being locked up in a cage surrounded by criminals. Spoiler alert, not very well. “He’s done so much to bend the law in order to catch the bad guys that he’s ended up in jail,” Elba revealed. “That’s where we start the story. This old case that didn’t really ever get solved creeps up back into his life. And John can’t help but find a way to get involved. This bad guy is out there and he has to go out and get him.”

Finally, being punished for his violent methods will not stop Luther, though, with director Jamie Payne revealing that, if anything, the whole sorry affair has made John Luther even worse. “Luther’s an unstoppable force,” Payne said. “But up to this point, he’s had to tread around the law of the police, because that was his job. Now, he’s a fugitive. This is Luther untethered. This man is so forward in his thinking and is in action. He’s like a wrecking ball, but the smartest wrecking ball you’ve ever met in your life.”

Luther: The Fallen Sun will debut in select theaters in February before landing on Netflix on March 10.
