Netflix has been busy over the past few years snapping up studios and creators for its Netflix Original lineup. Below, we’ll take a look at every announced overall and first-look deal Netflix has arranged so far.
Netflix’s overall deals still pale in comparison with some industry staples. HBO, CBS, and ABC outnumber Netflix’s overall deals quite dramatically, particularly when it comes to individual talent. With that said, the list below is impressive and covers a whole range of genres.
In November 2020, Netflix appointed Nne Abong as the VP of overall deals.
It’s also worth noting that although this is the definitive list, it’s actually probably nowhere close to being every overall deal struck. That’s because many overall deals reportedly aren’t publicized.

Having starred in the heart-wrenching Pieces of a Woman for Netflix in early 2021, the British actress has signed a first-look deal with Netflix for “female-focused films” that will explore the “female experience”.
Courtney Kemp

Known for: Power
In 2021, Netflix stole two major assets from Lionsgate. The Sony deal and the architect of Starz’s biggest franchise, Power.
Signing with Netflix for a reported high eight-figure deal, she will create new series under her production company, End of Episode.
Farhan Akhtar & Ritesh Sidhwani / Excel Entertainment

Known for: Dil Chahta Hai, Gully Boy and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
This deal with Indian creators Farhan Akhtar & Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment will see the pair work on new series for Netflix.
Among the first of the new titles from the pair includes Dabba Cartel and Queen of the Hill.
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich

Serving as the showrunner for The Witcher, Lauren Hissrich cemented her relationship with Netflix in the summer of August 2021 signing up to continue her duties as the architect of Netflix’s The Witcher universe and lead other creative projects for Netflix.

Netflix already had a deal with these two prolific Israeli creators but reupped it in August 2021 shortly after the release of Hit & Run.

Having appeared in a number of Netflix Original films, Netflix struck a multi-film deal with the actress back in late July 2021 which includes a sequel to the top-performing family movie, Yes Day.
Michael Starrbury

Emmy-nominated writer Michael Starrbury who notably wrote episode 4 of Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us and is involved in the upcoming limited series, Colin in Black and White.
Greg Berlanti & Sarah Schechter

This producing pair are teaming up for brand new feature films coming exclusively to Netflix.
Greg Berlanti is perhaps best known for his work on the DC shows on The CW (and a host of other titles with Warner Brothers) while Sarah Schecter serves as a producer on The CW’s All American.
Zack Snyder / The Stone Quarry

Known for: Army of the Dead, DCEU and 300.
After releasing Army of the Dead in the summer of 2021, Netflix and Zack Snyder cemented their relationship with an overall deal which includes future Army of the Dead projects and other titles such as the sci-fi title, Rebel Moon.
Up until his Netflix deal, Zack Snyder had worked almost exclusively with Warner Brothers.
Joey King

Known for: The Kissing Booth
Known most recently for starring in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth, the Emmy nominated actress will work with Netflix under a first-look deal that covers movies from her production company, All The King’s Horses.
Joey King also has a deal with Hulu.
Brian Yorkey

Known for: 13 Reasons Why
Known for being the showrunner for the popular albeit controversial 13 Reasons Why for Netflix, Brian Yorkey will work with Netflix under a multi-year deal with his first project being Echoes.
Studio Powerhouse

Known for: Castlevania, He-Man
Studio Powerhouse is well, a powerhouse animation studio for Netflix. They’ve already produced so much for Netflix so far and they entered into a new deal on June 30th with Netflix for future projects.
They’ve already got a number of projects on the go including Skull Island and Tomb Raider.
The studio itself is founded by Brad Graeber and Bruce Tinnin.
Danielle Sanchez-Witzel

Known for: My Name is Earl, The Carmichael Show
Previously under deals at 20th Television, Danielle Sanchez-Witzel will form a new production company and work exclusively on Netflix projects which are expected to be in the comedy genre.
Steven Spielberg / Amblin Partners
Deal signed: June 2021
Known for: Blockbuster movies including The Trial of the Chicago 7, 1917, Ready Player One, Jurassic World & more.
Having previously had less than stellar views of Netflix, Spielberg is now operating on a first-look deal with Netflix delivering multiple movies a year to Netflix although it’s worth noting his previous deal with Universal continues too.
One of the first films to be delivered next from Amblin and Netflix is Maestro starring Bradley Cooper although that’s not part of this specific deal.
Jennifer Lopez / Nuyorican Productions

Known for: Musician, Acting and Producing
Already working on two Netflix Original movies at the time of the announcement, Jennifer Lopez has become a big name in the film business.
Both The Cipher and The Mother are already coming to Netflix from Jennifer Lopez.
According to Netflix, both film and television projects are going to be included in the deal.
21 Laps / Shawn Levy

Known for: Stranger Things, Shadow and Bone
We’ve stated numerous times that 21 Laps has been one of the best output deals Netflix has struck thus far and alongside the announcement of Shadow and Bone season 2, Netflix announced they had renewed their output deal with Shawn Levy.
The expanded deal now includes a first-look deal for feature films and extends the TV deal.
Netflix announced alongside the renewal of the deal that 15 additional series and films are in active development.
Irony Point / Daniel Powell & Alex Bach

The team behind Irony Point expanded their deal with Netflix which will include comedy, sketch, variety and other projects.
Sony Pictures

Known for: Spider-man and countless other movies.
Although the core of the announcement with the Sony Pictures partnership was about the first window deal for movies, hidden away was the fact that Netflix is about to get a bunch of Sony movies exclusively.
They have a lot of IP to mine whether that be PlayStation IP or some of their vast movie library although has been downplayed to be only a couple per year.
Peter Berg (Film 44)

Through his production company, Peter Berg signed up for new Netflix productions via a first-look deal.
Berg is currently an executive producer on a new Netflix series Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse.

Snapping up more talent from Disney’s animation team, Netflix signed a deal with the Pixar veteran Ronnie Del Carmen.
His first project is a feature film but will extend to TV series and being a general consultant according to Cartoon Brew.

Among the many talent-steals from Disney is Nancy Kanter, who signed a deal with Netflix in February 2021. Her talents at Disney resulted in some of Disney Junior’s and Disney+’s biggest early hits.
Roger Black and Waco O’Guin

Known for: Brickleberry, Paradise PD
The creators of Paradise PD signed an overall deal early in 2021 hot on the heals of the announcement of season 3 which arrived several months later. Known for animation the pair also set their next project with Netflix called Farzar.
Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh

This deal is expected to have started with these two producers before January 2021 but it was only included alongside the announcement of The Formula a new movie from director Gerard McMurray.
Berry Welsh and Jane Rosenthal have team upped already for a few major Netflix projects thus far including The Irishman, When They See Us and Quincy.
Noah Baumbach

Known for: Marriage Story, Mistress America
The prolific movie director Noah Baumbach signed a multi-film deal with Netflix in January 2021.
His previous Netflix movie Marriage Story was an awards magnet and his next project seems to be aiming for similar heights.

The deal length wasn’t disclosed but is set to be “long-term” and will see Hart be the main star in at least four films

Alongside the announcement of Locke & Key season three, Netflix said they had entered into an overall deal with the co-runner of the show for future projects.
David Fincher

Known for: Love, Death & Robots, House of Cards, Mindhunter & countless movies.
This is an odd one. Officially, Netflix has never announced an output deal with the famed director and producer David Fincher but in an interview with French outlet Premiere, he revealed he’s working with them on a four-year deal which is why so many of his projects are heading to Netflix.
We heard through the grapevine that Fincher had been reluctant to put any type of deal in writing given his treatment at previous studios but clearly, that’s changed. We don’t know when the four years started nor when it’ll end.
Suzanne Mackie / Orchid Pictures

Suzanne Mackie has been one of the influential figures behind Netflix’s The Crown series alongside Peter Morgan. She leaves Left Bank Pictures (who also work closely with Netflix) to produce exclusive new British TV series and movies for Netflix under Orchid Pictures.
Jorge R. Gutiérrez

Known for: The Book of Life, El Tigre
Expanding his already fruitful relationship with Netflix is Jorge R. Gutiérrez who is currently working on the ambitious Maya and the Three which is due out in late 2021 plus is a writer on The Loud House Movie due out on Netflix next year also.
The new deal will see him work on even more animated projects for Netflix.
Michael Green

Known for: American Gods, Blade Runner 2049
Michael Green signed up to produce new series for Netflix in October 2020 with his most known work including the first season of American Gods before he and Bryan Fuller departed the project. He also had a hand in Netflix’s Raising Dion.
Alongside the deal announcement, the first title was announced in the form of an Berry Welsh’animated series called Blue Eye Samurai.
Mara Brock Akil

One of the prolific producers of content that have been found on The CW and UPN over the past two decades is set to write and produce scripted content for Netflix and “other creative projects.”
Many have wondered whether this could mean reunions for some of the shows in her back library that have been long rumored.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Known for: Being royals, Suits in the case of Meghan Markle
This deal is akin to the very public and controversial Obama deal and perhaps this one is the most controversial deal Netflix has made yet for a number of reasons.
Harry and Meghan will be working on numerous projects in the future but has attracted controversy given the big price tag (valued at $150 million) for a pair of creatives without much experience.
The pair will serve mainly as brand ambassadors for Netflix, which in our view which either will boost Netflix or devalue it, depending on your views on the royals.
Guillermo del Toro

Known for: Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, The Shape of Water
Behind some of the biggest fantasy hits in the past few decades is the Mexican filmmaker who has joined Netflix after a number of projects already on Netflix.
His deal is expected to be across formats with both new TV series and movies coming exclusively to Netflix.
The only thing we would add to this is that The Hollywood Reporter originally reported the overall output deal but the post has since been deleted.

Charlie Brooker & Annabel Jones

Known for: Black Mirror
After months of speculation, Deadline broke the news that Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones had signed with Netflix but not in the traditional sense. Netflix has taken a big stake in the newly formed Broke and Bones company set up by the two creators.
So far, it’s thought that a new TV series and interactive special are on the way at least but the company has also hired a head of comedy too. Black Mirror is not currently included in the deal with season six of the show still in limbo.
Carolina Rivera

Writer and producer Carolina Rivera set an overall deal with Netflix and is currently attached to Netflix’s upcoming series Madre Solo Hay Dos.

Netflix has been slowly building up its African content and will be supercharging it with it teaming up with Nigerian filmmaker Mo Abudu who is behind the production company EbonyLife.

Boom Studios

Not for the first time, Netflix struck up a deal with comic maker Boom Studios who are behind the likes of Once & Future, Mouse Guard, Lumberjanes but has also had a hand in developing TMNT and Power Ranger comics but also a comic series for Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
The new pact will see Netflix develop TV series on Boom’s own properties and includes the upcoming feature movie, The Unsound.
Chernin Entertainment

In perhaps, the biggest movie output deal Netflix has scored thus far came in April 2020. Peter Chernin who operates under his banner Chernin Entertainment signed a first-look deal with the streamer.
Up until now, Chernin Entertainment has been creating movies solely for 20th Century Fox before the Disney acquisition. They’ve produced some of the biggest titles in the Fox library including The Greatest Showman, Ford V. Ferrari, and The Planets of the Apes franchise.
It’s worth noting that the deal with Netflix is non-exclusive.
John Boyega / UpperRoom Productions

Known for: Star Wars, Attack the Block
John Boyega, hot off his run in the new Disney Star Wars trilogy where his character was completely wasted (no, I’m not getting over it), announced that he and his production company would be producing non-English language African titles for Netflix.
Specifically, UpperRoom told Deadline that they “will develop film projects based on stories, cast, characters, crew, literary properties, mythology, screenplays and/or other elements in or around African countries.”

The animation studio behind popular adult animated series Big Mouth now has a first-look deal with Netflix. This will give Netflix the first chance to order one of the new projects that Titmouse has in development.

A month after the South Korean output deal, Netflix then struck a deal with Viacom18’s Tipping Point for exclusive new Indian content for Netflix worldwide.
Alongside the announcement came the announcement of several new projects including Jamtara – Sabka Number Aayega, She and Taj Mahal 1989.
JTBC & Studio Dragon

Known for: South-Korean Dramas
Netflix has been slowly building up its list of K-dramas for years and JTBC has been one of the biggest providers. Although the two had an agreement of sorts dating back to 2017, 2020 will see all output from the studio come to Netflix.
The deal starts in 2020 it will see all future JTBC prime-time series come to Netflix globally plus they’ll work together on new projects together too.
The Studio Dragon deal is with itself and its parent company CJ ENM. It’ll see the production house produce new series for Netflix and will see other titles come too.
Nickelodeon

Known for: Children’s content like Spongebob Squarepants, Rugrats and more
The news of Netflix striking an output deal with Nickelodeon conveniently came the same week Disney+ stormed onto the US market.
The deal states that Netflix will be getting new content, whether that be in the form of movies and TV series based on existing or new IP.
Netflix has had dealings with Nick in the past with it carrying two of their movies in the summer of 2019.
Peter Morgan

Known for The Crown, Peter Morgan will continue his tenure with Netflix beyond the planned end of The Crown.
The deal is reportedly paying around the eight-figure range to keep Peter Morgan on.
The Duffer Brothers

The Duffer Brothers are the two men that write and create Netflix’s biggest flagship show, Stranger Things.
Netflix also has an output deal with Shawn Levy who notably helps produce Stranger Things for Netflix too.

On September 18th, 2019, Netflix announced they struck a first-look deal with the talented director and show creator. Behind Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe from earlier in 2019, it’s not surprising Netflix honed in the talents of Nahnatchka Khan.
Only her movies are included with her continuing her work at ABC on the TV side.
Patty Jenkins

Known for: Wonder Woman
On September 5th, Netflix announced that Patty Jenkins who is coming off the back of her incredibly successful directing of DC’s Wonder Woman to produce new TV series for the streamer.
No news on what sort of TV programs she will produce as of yet but Jenkins has directed episodes of The Killing and I Am the Night.
Karan Johar

Karan Johar is a prolific writer and producer in Indian having had a hand in some huge movies from the region.
In its big push in the region, Netflix signed up Karan Johar to produce fictional and non-fiction titles for the streamer.
David Benioff and Dan Weiss

Known for: Game of Thrones
In perhaps one of the most controversial Netflix deals to date, they signed a reported $250 million deal for five years to work on a series of TV and movie projects. Of course, they’re coming off the back of Game of Thrones, one of the biggest shows in the world although it had a rather controversial final season. They’ll begin working on Netflix projects once their Star Wars project wraps up.

The deal with Netflix and Janet Mock made history in June 2019 as it’s the first overall deal of this sort with a trans person. It’ll see Netflix get exclusive access to any new series and the first look at any movie projects too.

Ricky Gervais

Beyonce Knowles is a world-renowned artist and actress and is going to producing at least another two specials just for Netflix in the coming years.

His latest novel released in March 2019 to rave reviews and is one of the projects to get the Netflix treatment.
Kenya Barris
