Ahead of CES 2023, LG’s LG Innotek division has revealed a new smartphone camera module that boasts a true optical telephoto zoom lens.
LG Innotek says this could reduce the size of the dreaded camera bump that is customarily present on smartphones with a big and complex camera array. Generally, the ones that have the telephoto lens alongside the other sensors. LG is claiming this to be a world’s first, which should help it be the camera sensor of choice for more smartphone manufacturers this year.
In fact LG Innotek already seems to have some brands lined up. While the company didn’t officially confirm any brands, the module will be appearing in some smartphones that are poised to be announced during CES 2023. Which means consumers will likely see these new camera modules in phones launching later in the year.
The LG telephoto smartphone camera module contains movable parts
This is part of the secret behind LG Innotek’s new module. A series of movable components within it that lend a whole host of benefits to the overall setup. These are the same kinds of builds you’d expect to see in DSLR or mirrorless cameras. And would allow smartphones with this module to capture photos that won’t lose image quality even if zooming in from a distance further away.
LG Innotek also says this new module can help with battery efficiency. And there’s never a scenario where improved battery efficiency in your phone is a bad thing. According to LG Innotek, the module also has a built-in optical image stabilizer for cutting down on blur. Something that can be a particularly bigger problem when using higher zoom.
To make this all possible, LG Innotek partnered with Qualcomm to implement this module as part of the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform. Which the company says will “enhance the image tuning custom for the optics, which includes Auto-Focus, Auto-Exposure, Auto-White Balance, lens shading correction and much more.”
