LG and Samsung have been at each others throats for years. As two of the biggest electronics giants in the world, both being based in South Korea. And now LG’s Display arm has apparently beaten Samsung Display to the punch with PHOLED.

For those unaware, OLED panels are made up of two main types of OLED material. There’s fluorescent and phosphorescent. Typically, fluorescent has been much easier to work with, but the downside is that it’s nowhere near as efficient as phosphorescent. So, display makers have been trying to make phosphorescent OLED work for years. And now LG Display is claiming victory after crossing a major milestone. Having verified the commercialization of panels that use blue phosphorescent PHOLED material.

This would be the first time that all three primary OLED colors (red, green, and blue) have been produced from PHOLED in a format that is viable for mass production.

What this means is, a much more efficient OLED display, as a 100% PHOLED panel would be about 99% efficient. With almost all of the energy consumed being converted into light, with almost no heat. But, as of right now, LG Display is only claiming a 15% energy savings over panels that use fluorescent blue OLED. But this does prove that PHOLED may be able to meet the very lofty expectations, one day.

Samsung is rumored to be debuting a blue PHOLED panel later this year.

PHOLED finally gives LG Display the leg up that it desperately needs

LG Display and Samsung Display have been in a heated rivalry for quite some time. And Samsung typically beats LG to the punch with new display technologies, like QD-OLED. Samsung has also been rated higher with its OLED panels when compared to LG. Despite LG still being the OLED king in terms of TVs.

But with LG Display having claimed victory in the race to PHOLED, we could see LG take that spot once again.
