Lenovo has announced its latest gaming laptop, the Legion 9i, and it’s boasting some exciting features that will definitely make you stand up and take notice. In a “world’s first” accomplishment according to Lenovo, the Legion 9i is the only 16-inch gaming laptop on the market to come with an integrated self-contained liquid cooling system. Which will no doubt help gamers keep the laptop internals to lower temperatures during heavy gaming loads. Lenovo says this can ensure a maximum output of 230W TDP for the best performance while preventing overheating.

Perhaps even more impressive is that it weighs only 5.64 lbs. and it’s only 0.74-inches (22.7mm) thick. Lenovo worked with Cooler Master to co-engineer the liquid cooling system, which runs over the GPU VRAM to help manage the heat output. It was designed to turn on automatically once GPU temperatures reach 84-degrees Celsius. Lenovo is also pairing this with a triple-fan system that’s tuned by AI for airflow. Together, the two should ensure the system “stays cool even under the most grueling of gaming and content creation sessions” Lenovo says.

Interestingly, the liquid cooling system added more weight to the laptop and that just wouldn’t do. So Lenovo got to work and designed a new A-cover made of forged carbon chips. This helped Lenovo shave off some weight to bring the laptop down to 5.64 lbs. As a happy coincidence, the A-cover on each unit has its own unique carbon chip pattern because of the process Lenovo had to use to forge the cover.

The Lenovo Legion 9i gaming laptop uses AI to improve frame rates too

The AI-tuned fans are definitely a neat idea. And it’ll be interesting to see how well they work. But that’s not the only place Lenovo is using AI technology in this laptop. AI is also integrated with the system via Lenovo’s LA-2 AI chip. This will interface with the display using what Lenovo calls a ‘Smart FPS’ feature. It can then track frames per second and use that information to divert power to the GPU and CPU if needed. Helping to make sure games always run smooth.

For remaining specs, the Legion 9i is sporting a 16-inch 3.2K Mini-LED display with a frame rate of 165Hz and a 3ms response time. You can get with up to an RTX 4090 GPU with 16GB of DDR6 VRAM, and it comes with an Intel Core i9-13980HX CPU. It also has multiple memory configs with choices for either 32GB of 64GB of overclocked system RAM. As for storage, you can get the laptop with up to 2TB. More than enough room for plenty of games.

Additionally, it seems to have all the ports you could ever need. With a USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 1 port and a USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 port on the right side along with the E-Shutter button. On the left side you have an audio combo jack and an SD card reader. Then there’s even more ports on the back. Including the DC power port, another USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, and an ethernet port. Lenovo says it plans to launch the Legion 9i gaming laptop starting in October alongside the Legion Go gaming handheld.

The laptop won’t be cheap though. As it comes with a starting price of $4,399.99. Once it launches it’ll be available from Lenovo’s website along with participating retailers.
