“A family’s (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke) vacation is upended when two strangers (Mahershala Ali and Myha’la) arrive at night, seeking refuge from a cyberattack that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.”
Based on the best-selling 2020 novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam, who also serves as executive producer of the film alongside Barack and Michelle Obama, Tonia Davis, Daniel M. Stillman and Nick Krishnamurthy, Leave the World Behind will focus on the ensemble of Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, and Myha’la, with the likes of Farrah Mackenzie, Charlie Evans, and Kevin Bacon also set to feature.
Leave the World Behind is written, directed and produced by Sam Esmail, who is best known for his work on the likes of the critically acclaimed television series Mr. Robot, the mystery series Homecoming, the comedy drama Comet, and the thriller series The Resort.
Sam Esmail Heaps Praise on His Leave the World Behind Ensemble
Filmmaker Sam Esmail has heaped praise on his small cast that will feature in Leave the World Behind. Esmail, who has previously collaborated with Julia Roberts on Homecoming, knew instantly that the celebrated actress was perfect for the role of Amanda.
“What’s really great about casting someone like Julia Roberts is that you don’t have to worry about the likeability factor. Julia has the uncanny ability to channel the humanity out of any character, regardless of how flawed they may be.”
Mahershala Ali stars alongside Roberts as G.H., with Esmail drawn to the award-winning actor’s varied back catalog and ability to play very different roles.
“Mahershala’s poignant everyman quality mixed with his undeniable charisma make it nearly impossible for him to deliver a substandard performance. That was what G.H. needed, a deep-hearted accessibility that lets him be your avatar into the story.”
Lastly, Esmail heaped praise on Ethan Hawke, calling his portrayal of Clay, Esmail saw “one of the more fascinating characters in this film.”
“Clay as a character is so interesting because he upends everything you’d expect from the patriarch of the family. He’s the guy that’s usually portrayed as the sturdy, flawless hero of the story. And he isn’t. What Ethan did with him is so difficult to pull off because he took a character that disappoints himself and his family in small and big ways throughout the story — but instead of begrudging him for it, you instantly relate to him that much more because of it. That’s a magic trick that’s not only hard to pull off, but it’s just something I’ve never quite seen rendered on screen in such a pure and vulnerable way.”
Leave the World Behind is scheduled to land on Netflix later this year on 8 December 2023.
