Apple first debuted MagSafe technology for the iPhone back in 2020. It was a clever idea to introduce a more secure and faster form of wireless charging. Since then, many MagSafe-compatible products have been released, but the coolest one has to be the Komutr earbuds from Artronic.
Convenient design
Artronic has announced its latest earbuds ahead of CES 2025. These earbuds come in the form of the Komutr, and while true wireless earbuds are a dime a dozen, what makes this extra cool is the support for MagSafe.
Most wireless earbuds these days come with charging cases that keep the earbuds safe when not in use while charging them. The only problem is that you have to remember to bring your earbuds out with you. Sometimes you might be charging it at home and forget to bring it out.
The Komutr earbuds solve this problem by introducing MagSafe support to its charging case. This means that users can easily snap the case to the back of an iPhone that supports MagSafe. In fact, it should technically be possible to use it with Android devices that have Qi2 support since Qi2 uses similar magnetic technology as MagSafe.
For those who don’t have a compatible device, Artronic says there will be “adjustable options for smartphones without MagSafe capabilities”.
The earbuds come with 8mm drivers, support active noise cancellation, environmental noise cancellation, touch controls, and battery life of up to 10 hours on a single charge, for a total of 30 hours when used with the charging case.
The case itself measures 0.47-inches thin, so it shouldn’t add too much bulk to your phone. It can also double as a kickstand. One thing to note is that it only uses MagSafe to remain attached to your phone. It does not actually charge itself wirelessly. The retail launch of the Komutr is planned for May 2025. Pre-orders will go live on the 15th of January, 2025 and the earbuds will be priced at $129.
Take note, Apple
There’s no denying how well Apple’s AirPods work. The earbuds pair extremely well and quickly with Apple’s ecosystem of devices, there’s deep integration within iOS, and it also sounds relatively decent. Unfortunately, it can sometimes feel like the company isn’t thinking too far ahead with its earbuds accessories.
For instance, the AirPods did not initially launch with support for wireless charging. That came at a later date which meant that customers had to either buy a new charging case or buy a new set of AirPods. The company was also slow to adopt USB-C, with previous AirPods models only supporting Lightning.
The Komutr earbuds demonstrate such a fantastic idea that it’s hard to believe Apple never thought of it themselves. It seems like a surefire way of locking in users to its ecosystem, but perhaps the iterative upgrades and changes are part of Apple’s plan to force consumers to keep spending money at its stores.
