M. Night Shyamalan is best known for his mind-bending thrillers, including Split, Glass, Unbreakable, The Village, and The Sixth Sense. He’s also known for giving each of his films a distinct look, and Knock at the Cabin, based on the novel The Cabin at the End of the World, is no exception. Universal Pictures has released a trailer for the film, which stars Dave Bautista in an unexpected role.
With a few prominent side characters, the film comes across as full of tension and suspense. In this upcoming horror mystery, every second of the film could decide the next moment, and here’s the full breakdown of the trailer from Universal Pictures.
A Peaceful Vacation Turned Unexpectedly Grim
The trailer starts with the family of two fathers, Andrew (Jonathan Groff) and Eric (Ben Aldridge), and their adorable daughter Wen (Kristen Cui), riding out of the city to a cabin in the woods to spend some quality time together. They pass the time by singing songs and playing games during the ride, hoping to make the most of their vacation. After arriving, everyone is excited to get some peace of mind, so they do all kinds of relaxing things like jumping in the pond and having a drink on the balcony. At the same time, Wen sits outside the cabin, and it appears that she’s either researching insects or playing a little game in her book.
While everything is going well, no one expects their peaceful vacation would turn gloomy when a man with glasses arrives at their cabin and greets the little girl. Following the scene, we see the credits “From M. Night Shyamalan” on the screen matched with a knocking sound on the door, which is brilliant. The man in glasses appears to be Leonard, and based on his expression, he doesn’t seem to bring positive news.
Strangers at the Doorstep: Friends or Foes?
Wen asks Leonard (Dave Bautista) why he is at the cabin, and he replies, “I’m here to make friends with you and your dads too.” Those are some pretty sweet words for a little girl, but Leonard claims his heart is broken because of what he is about to do today. Following his words, three more strangers are seen walking toward the cabin. That’s definitely not good news considering Leonard is feeling guilty and giving off a creepy vibe.
The trailer shifts focus to the next scene where the dads and girl are indoors, and they see four strangers at their doorstep knocking at the cabin. When Eric looks out the window, he utters the words, “There is a woman carrying something that looks like a pick with a chain and a mallet head,” in a freaked-out tone. So far, the trailer keeps things intense and builds a sense of anticipation about what these strangers want.
A Mission From God?
As the fathers ponder the changes in events, knocks get harder, and the scene shifts to little girl Wen running back inside the cabin from the previous scene where she met Leonard. After that, Leonard exclaims, “You see, the four of us have a very important job to do. In fact, it might be the most important job in the history of the world.” The strangers then begin thrashing the door with their tools in an attempt to break in, and the family is quick on their feet to secure the door and defend themselves from the perpetrators. However, everything goes for naught when they break in and tie Eric and Andrew to the chairs, leaving the little girl terrified in the back.
The trailer concludes with Leonard speaking on behalf of four strangers, all of whom are filled with guilt and fear. He quotes, “We were called and are united by a common vision, which is now become a command that we cannot ignore.” It means they are either given a mission by God or mentally ill. Leonard then explains their mission for being here and how the family has been chosen to make a horrible decision — if they fail, the world will end. The trailer then ends with a woman with her head covered in a white mask being taken hostage.
The question is, what kind of apocalypse will be triggered if the family does not make a decision? And who is the woman held hostage at the end of the trailer? Perhaps the family made a choice to save the world and themselves by capturing a person. The trailer is very intense and thought-provoking, making the viewers sift through their minds for an answer. It is nearly impossible to figure out what’s going on in M. Night Shyamalan’s head, and we can only hope to solve the mystery of Knock at the Cabin when the film hits theaters on February 3, 2023.
