“Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic, franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.”
Following on from the critically acclaimed Planet of the Apes trilogy, which was comprised of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and finally War for the Planet of the Apes, the epic saga continues with another long title, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Set many years after the conclusion of the modern trilogy, the follow-up finds many ape societies having grown from when the Moses-like Caesar brought his people to an oasis, while humans have been reduced to a feral-like existence. Some groups have never heard of Caesar, while others have contorted his teaching to build burgeoning empires.
When one ape leader begins to enslave other groups to find human technology, another ape, who watched his clan be taken, embarks on a journey to find freedom. A young human woman becomes key to latter’s quest, although she has plans of her own…
Directed by Wes Ball from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison, and produced by Joe Hartwick Jr., Jaffa, Silver, and Jason Reed, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be led by Owen Teague as Cornelius, the son of Caesar.
The rest of the cast includes Freya Allan, Peter Macon, Eka Darville, Kevin Durand, Travis Jeffery, Neil Sandilands, Sara Wiseman, Lydia Peckham, Ras-Samuel Weld A’abzgi, William H. Macy, and Dichen Lachman.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Is Due to Land in Theaters in 2024
While the majority of the most recent Planet of the Apes trilogy was helmed by The Batman director Matt Reeves, this latest era will be steered by The Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball, who has assured fans that the beloved franchise is in safe hands.
“We have a take. We have a way of staying in the universe that was created before us, but we’re also opening ourselves up in being able to do some really cool new stuff. Again, I’m trying to be careful here. I’ll say this, for fans of the original three, don’t worry — you’re in good hands.”
At present, the inclusion of seminal actor and motion capture master Andy Serkis is unknown (he could appear as Caesar in flashbacks or as a guide to his son) but he has teased the quality of what Wes Ball has in store for the franchise.
“I think Wes Ball is going to do an amazing job with this film. I think it’s, from what I’ve heard and what I’ve seen, there’s some amazing conceptual artwork. And where they’ve chosen to land the story and take off with the next iteration, I think it’s gonna blow people’s minds.”
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is scheduled to be released by 20th Century Studios on May 24, 2024, and is intended as the first installment in a new trilogy. You can check out an image gallery with a ton of new stills below:
