Netflix has announced that Golden Globe Award winner and Academy Award-nominated actress Kate Hudson will be the lead in the upcoming Untitled Mindy Kaling comedy series.
Produced by Mindy Kaling, who was behind Netflix’s Never Have I Ever and also known for The Office and The Mindy Project, the new half-hour comedy series will soon be getting into production with the show inspired by the real-lives of family owners for major iconic sports franchises specifically the LA Lakers. The project was first announced to be in development back in June 2021.
Per Netflix, the writing team has had a bit of a shake-up with Elaine Lo, who is no longer listed as a writer on the project but will instead consist of Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen. The trio all previously worked on The Mindy Project. The latter, David Stassen, will serve as the showrunner.
Kate Hudson, Howard Klein, Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis serve as executive producers on the project. Jordan Rambis will produce.
The show has still yet to be officially titled, with Netflix referring to it as Untitled Mindy Kaling Comedy Series, whereas others refer to it as Untitled Basketball Office Comedy.
Kate Hudson plays Isla Gordon
Kate Hudson will lead the main cast plus also have an executive producer credit on the series.
Hudson most recently appeared for Netflix in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery but also featured in Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and Bride Wars.
Her character is Isla Gordon, who is described as a former socialite who has been relegated to the charitable contribution ring in her family’s basketball team and has always been overlooked and underappreciated. She’s given her time to shine after her brother gets into an accident and has to spend time in rehab. She takes control of the Los Angeles Waves with her best friend, Ali Lee.
Other cast members will be announced in due course.
In addition to today’s new cast announcement, Netflix has also provided an updated logline for the forthcoming series that’s set to consist of 10 episodes for its first season:
“When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.”
Filming begins in Los Angeles in February 2024
Filming on the new project kicks off at the end of February 2024, set to run through to May 24th, 2024.
